Hello, I'm wondering if anyone can help me please. The aircon in my van is kaput. I think he said the condenser maybe. Anyway I live in my van and can't afford a new one. Wondering if it's a possibility to put a portable air con in it please. I'm not happy about it but my sister and brother in law think it would be ok and that he would remove the window and replace it with perspex? Thoughts and info please?
I would also consider, if you have front and back windows in the van :
If funds are limited, can fit into a front or back window with support on the A frame or back bumper, I would look at the $266 offering after someone recommended it providing they have it installed. www.ebay.com.au/itm/385745608392
They also use air from the room which is what goes out the room via the exhaust pipe.
So unless you can add a second pipe modification for intake from the outside, with some sort of Frankenstein setup. I just wouldn't bother with a portable. & they are noisy.
I have added second pipe to our portable at home. It's a lot better, but still a split system is much better.

Hi I saw that one for sale on ebay. But it is suspicious as shown below in the specs. compressor integrated semiconductor refrigerator, WTF does this mean ??
Reminders before ordering: This is a compressor integrated semiconductor refrigerator, so it is normal to have some operating noise when it is working.
jaahn, there are a number of sellers on the web/ebay for the cheapie, including someone in Oz, and if faulty you have the ebay send back at no cost, and if purchased from an Oz seller 12 months warranty? if they can be contacted?
Hey in no way am I suggesting buy one without a genuine customer supporting that its good value. ( and the integrated semiconductor and Power info could have been lost in translation)
The OP says living in the van and no windows on the ends.
I don't know much about air conditioners, but what about a split system type aircon.
I have read that are pretty efficient and no window required.
Like you our roof top AC is Kaput, also we live in our van.
A number attempts to have someone visit and assess whats wrong with it, is not suitable.
As a stop gap whe have a portable AC is it worth the money, no they are not suitable for a caravan first off the exhaust tube has to go somewhere to take the hot air out of the van, then you have the problem of the drain, and it takes up too much space.
The cheapest option in a reverse cylcle window AC either mounted in a front or back window, downside they can be noisy.
What are we doing we are waiting for a tech to come out and check what he needs to install a household split system, the airhandler will be in a mogified overhead cupboard and the compressor unit will mounted on the back wall of the caravan.
A Household split system you can buy from $650 and installation will cost around a $1000, compare that to a new roof AC starting at $1600 plus installation, I had a quote for a new one and it was over $3000 because we have a big caravan.
When its done I will try and post so pictures and end cost

This is how i fitted a cooling only AC to my van (heating is diesel heater) It only takes less than 5min to set up or remove. It just slides in & sits on the bed for traveling. These types of AC are reasonably cheap.
Thank you so much for the info, I will look into this. I did have someone look at it to tell me that whatever is wrong with it would cost as much to repair as a new one
