The next-generation Nissan Patrol is getting closer to its reveal, and will drop its big V8 for a smaller twin-turbo six.
Camouflaged prototypes of the Patrol and Armada, as its known in markets like North America, have been making the rounds in recent months as Nissan tests its next-generation flagship SUV in the US and the Middle East.

Camouflaged prototypes of the Patrol and Armada, as its known in markets like North America, have been making the rounds in recent months as Nissan tests its next-generation flagship SUV in the US and the Middle East.
That'll make the current model more popular. Not many cars around now with 400hp, and the V8 sound can never be copied.
Twin-turbo 6 indeed! Will Mr Nissan be smart enough to make it diesel, I wonder?

Diesel's are good, especially as a pulling engine. I've owned them in the past. but a nice free revving petrol engine is a more enjoyable drive, especially when not towing. For driving enjoyment I'll have a V6 or V8 petrol engine coupled to a nice close ratio 9 speed or alike. Just my opinion.
Genially speaking Nissan make great vehicles, the same as Toyota. But I must say Toyota market their vehicles better. Nissan has allways been behind the eighth ball when it comes to marketing.
Look at that Add on tv at the moment, Toyota's ticking over big kilometres on their speedo's, good marketing. Especially the old codger driving the what is it? a 79 series? ticking over 900000 Ks. Reminds me of yobaar. hahaha.

I was looking at buying a second hand Patrol with low kilometres back when I bought the Isuzu but could not find any so went with the Isuzu. People I know that have a Patrol seem to think they are the best car they ever owned. I had use of one in the NT for remote work and they are just great. I have a rellie with an early model Patrol, about a 1994-5 model that has over 800,000 ks and is still going strong.
I think they have said goodbye to diesel for good as they are trying to increase their sales in the Middle East and the USA. I think the V8 is about to become a thing of the past in these vehicles. I see even Toyota is offering a six cylinder in the Series 70 that is about to be released.

I still have my old 1996 GQ 4.2L EFI (petrol) with only 290,000Km. About 250,000 of this pulling the 2.4t van at 85-90km/hr on bitumen only. I have had it since almost new with <50K on the clock when I got it for $30k & it has never done beach or corrugations & certainly not bush bashing. (A bit like 'little old ladies only driving to Church on Sundays' type vehicle LOL)
It runs beautifully if a bit truck like. I keep looking for reasons to upgrade but just can't bring myself to change, especially when I look at the $s & the issues people seem to be having with modern (eurofied) diesels.
My unleaded 91 fuel consumption doesn't look too bad when compared with the current high octane guzzling Patrol.
This GQ was close to the end of the run of great Patrols where they were probably superior to the Cruisers. Then came the Grenades & the end of great Patrols, perhaps until now. The fuel injected electronic ignition and increased towing capacity (2.8T) is a bonus to add to the bomb proof old iron block based motor.
I love the sound of petrol V8s but am extremely wary of modern diesels. It would be nice to ride in a modern vehicle with all the up to date electronic gadgets.

Are you sure? I believe that it is the stupid little 2.8 litre out of the Hilux.
And, horror of horrors, it has an auto trans. Spare me. NO Cheers here. Spoiling a good car to cater to alleged "demand".

When this is done they will then monitor the popularity or otherwise of the 2.8 option and then make a decision on the V8 continuing production. No decision to stop making the V8 has been made as yet however.
It seems the driving force, pardon the pun, is emissions standards being introduced world wide.

Could turn out to be an expensive exercise for Mr Toyota, as fitting a stupid little motor and auto trans to this car to cater to pansies will not disguise or compensate for the fact that this car, which is little more than a workhorse, rides like a dray, does not stop, is not pretty, and needs a paddock to turn around in.
