Tailem Bend to Pt Wakefield

G'day David, welcome to the Forum.

I can't help with current road conditions in that area as it has been years since I last travelled in thar area.

A couple of years ago I went from Tailem Bend and drove through Murray Bridge. Follow the B35 road, turn right when it joins B34 then the B10 road at Mt Pleasant through to Nuriootpa.

Turn left on Sturt Hwy for some 12kms and turn north for Freeling, pass through that town to the Horrocks Hwy. Stay on the Horrocks Hwy and turn left where it splits right to become the Barrier Hwy.

About 24kms along the Horrocks from that fork turn left at Auburn onto the B84 road that runs straight to Port Wakefield.

All roads are through open country with some slight rolling hills.

Hi David, I noticed you said you have tried Palmer, I agree it is pretty windy and hilly so I won't post a map showing the route through
Palmer!
I have found that the route through Adelaide is a bit all over the show and does use some skinny, heavily trafficked roads but if you take it easy you are soon onto the Northern Expressway and a good run north, not so bad really.

I think the route suggested by Peter D goes through Gawler. I looked at going that way but remembered that Gawler has narrow streets and the way through the town is not very straight forward, I gave it a pass.

Of course, coming from the south the town has a bypasss. When I looked at a street map it seemed to be awkward to pass through the town to get onto the bypass then head north.

Actually, when I passed that way I didn't go into Port Wakefield but continued onto Crystal Brook then to Port Augusta. But up to the turn off to Port Augusta it was easy towing, we were able to pass straight through all of the small towns we came to. Even the larger towns of Nuriootpa and Clare were straight through.

There was one interesting sign as we left the small town of Hallett just north of Clare, it said (just in case you blinked) "That Was Hallett."

It now comes down to your choice.

I agree with Long Weekend. The route through Gawler etc is slow. A couple of years ago, we did the reverse route from Port Wakefield to Murray Bridge and Tailem Bend. Scenic yes, but slower than the main roads into and through Adelaide, provided the travel time is out out of peak hours.
On one of main roads through Adelaide, somehow picked the right time and speed and most traffic lights were green for me.
