Used caravan purchasing checklist

Hi All,

Looking to see what others have as a list of items they check prior to purchasing a used caravan.

Mechanical: Drawbar, hitch, tyres (date), brakes, suspension, pop top, awning

Watch outs: Rust / visible cracks / uneven wear / sag

Internal: Fridge, A/C, cupboards, windows, burners/oven, water pump, water heater (if installed), door,

Watch outs: Smells / mould / loose items

Other: Electrics, gas bottles (dates), lights, weights,

Watch outs: Modifications from standard

Thanks in advance.

Check that the microwave works (speaking from experience).

Make sure it is not encumbered financially. Bit of a bugger if it is claimed by a finance company after you pay out. That is if buying privately, probably not such a big issue if dealing with a reputable dealer. But then these days you can't be to careful.

Check for water leaks in the roof. You may have to look inside the top storage lockers. Look for water stains on the plywood walls.

There are many items that need to be checked by a professional.
Caravan Council of Australia (Chief Engineer Colin Young) developed a buying guide for RV's check out their website.
It is imperative that a weighbridge check is carried out prior to purchase - many caravans are almost at their ATM before putting in food and clothing - This happens because water/gas/awnings/jerry can holders/Generators and Tong boxes, jockey wheels, off-road tyres, etc have been added after compliance plate is fittted either by Dealer or previous owner/s.
