RE: Communication in remote areas

what3words app will tell anyone in the world where you are on a map visually within
3 meters. All emergency services use them.

Quote the relevant words in a phone conversation or include in an SMS.

Even good for person to person use anytime.

And its FREE.

There is a difference between emergency rescue and getting help.

I agree that PLB would have to be the most reliable if rescue is the goal. But you may prefer to get someone who will help get you and your vehicle back to civilisation rather than be airlifted by a helicopter, leaving everything you own there. In that case some form of two way communication would be most desirable.

very good reply puts things in perspective. I remember one instance recently were some campers where cut off by flood waters and a helicopter had to drop a handheld radio in to them to check on their welfare

With Zoleo, initially its a 3 month plan with several different plans available. After the initial 3 months you can suspend your plan until needed again (small monthly fee). Please note Emerg services can be contacted by simply operating the SOS feature, they can then contact you via text to ascertain your problem, they will already have your location details. Please refer to the Zoleo website for more detailed information.

With Zoleo you must initially take out the plan for 3 months then, for a small monthly fee you can suspend your plan and then take it up latter on when required.
With Zoleo SOS function you can have a two way conversation with emergency responders so you can explain your situation so as they can be better prepared to assist you.
With Zoleo you can contact any mobile phone even if they do not have the Zoleo app and they can reply.
With Zoleo you can keep in contact with loved ones when, for instance walking or travelling in remote areas, gives them and yourself peace of mind. An EPIRB does not have this feature as far as I know.
With zoleo you can operate a simple check in function which will send a message to somebody that you have selected, this message (I am Ok) will include your GPS coordinates and a map showing your exact position.
I have used all of the above functions (except the SOS function) on a recent trip to western QLD and they have proven to be very reliable and can recommend

And that is a normal response when responding to a PLB activation.

Remember also. If you organise your own assistance when something goes wrong in a remote location, you can expect to spend some very big dollars to get that help where and when you need it.

The help and rescue provided if a PLB is legitimately activated is supplied FREE by the government.

A PLB is not in competition with other methods of communication. My advise it FIRSTLY have a PLB as the cheapest and most effective life saving system.

SECONDLY, if you choose to do so, add a sat phone or other 2 way system of your choice (dependent on your budget).

Cheers,

Peter

Were there any other health issues other than plenty of water to drink?
