It had to happen I guess.

Here in Vic we have a bloke with MND who has (together with his family) raised more than 100 million dollars over the last ten years to help find a cure for this horror disease. Neale Daniher is his name. He has MND.

In the recent Kings birthday awards the top award went to a recently retired pollie. What was his claim to fame?? He left this state virtually bankrupt with big money projects running millions of dollars over budget but, he got out before the proverbial "hit the fan" leaving someone in charge who could not run a raffle let alone a state.

To further rub salt into the wound we have an award given to a  comedian!! Do I feel strongly with regard to this annual farce, yep I sure do. It would appear that anyone with the right connections can get an "award" but a man who has spent the last years of his life trying to improve life for those suffering from a major disease, gets no recognition.

They lost me when Mick Jagger got a knighthood for "services to music" many moons ago. It's high time that this anachronistic event was consigned to the recycle bin where it belongs.

Get rid of the monarcy and their ridiculous awards granted by a useless King that we don't really need. Those awards prove it. 2 pollies got awards. Jesus, I deserve an award more than those 2 clowns put together, and that's saying something.

The only time a British king has an intimate knowledge of his Australian subjects is when they're kissing his backside.

It's our own wombats in our government that award these. The King has little to do with it. Just a figure head. And of course McGowan and Andrews got a gong. Federal Labor = gong for ex Labor Premiers. The awards were originally for people who actually did something significant for the betterment of Australians and Australia itself, sort of a medal for people like doctors or selfless people who had saved lives or made lives better, but has dissolved now into something quite meaningless awarded to people that quite frankly should never be considered. A complete joke now.

X2

In our case, being West Aussies, McGowan (in our opinion) did a fantastic job but, at the end of the day, it was his job and he did it well. Awards such as this are political and unnecessary.

Anyone who is paid to do a job should be excluded from a honor, there a whole string of pollies, public servents, sports people, entainers and media who get these awards but none of them realy deserve them, just like the officers who get a military award just for being in the region, thats not like a soldier who through acts of bravery to help others in perial.

Australian Honors should be awarded to those who give their time and effort for the betterment of the nation, just like the Mark Hughes Foundation, Fight MND, Glenn McGrath, people who give their leadership to youth of Australia in the Scouts, Guides etc, those who give to  volenteer emergency services, Red Cross and Charities.

When there is a disaster community groups come out to support those on the front line to feed and hydrate them.

To give an award to two scumbag premiers is an insult to the nation.

Prince Philip's "Knightmare" was awarded for his "long life of service and dedication".

Abbot must have indulged in some Woodstock Concert type druggery to come up with that idea.

Yes that was just wrong on a number of levels. We do have a complete bunch of dills for politicians in this country of all political persuasions. But at least we are marginally better than the US. You would think with a population of their size they could come up with two better candidates for President's than the frightful choice they have currently.

Magnarc he was born and bred just up the road from where I have lived for about the last 35 yrs. Have met him in person and spoken to him long before he ever got this blasted disease.

Very nice man to have known him and his family over the years.

x2, couldn't agree more, no one is more deserving of this type of award than Neale.   Probably get one after he is gone but then those higher up couldn't give a rat's a**e above the normal person so will probably never see one.

He was born in a small NSW town where all the good players come from

Hi Graham, thanks for the info on Neale Daniher, it was no more than I expected. He is one of the "good guys" who, by the way,  seem to be in short supply these days.

Being raised in UK I am well acquainted with the old school tie brigade. When I enlisted in the army I was posted to the Royal Horse Guards, (armoured division, I was never any good with horses!) The officers were almost all appointed either because daddy had served with the regiment or they went to Eton. These people were totally wrapped up with their social life and had little or no bloody idea what their rank entailed. It was an old boys club.

To illustrate a point I found myself in Egypt in 1956 driving a Daimler amoured car playing soldiers in the desert. Our car commander was a 2nd lieutenant from a prominent chocolate manufacturing family. The object of the exercise was to make our way to a certain point on the map and await further instructions. The distance was some 90 miles. After about an hour into the trip our commander, who was head out of the turret with his blue scarf trailing in the wind, came on the intercom to announce, " I say chaps I think we are lorst". He could not read a map or compass!! After checking we found that we were 30 miles to the East of where we should have been.

If you were from a middle class family your chances of climbing the ladder and getting into some sort of well paid position was next to none. It is over 50 years since I lived there but I doubt that much has changed.

Apologies for going off topic.
