Electricity rebate - where is it?

Just received our electricity bill. There was no $75 rebate for the quarter. I did some research:

The rebate will be automatically applied to your electricity bills in quarterly instalments.

For QLD households the first instalment will be applied by 8 July 2024.

For ACT, NSW, SA and VIC households, the first instalment will be applied by 19 August 2024.

Of course, it's the heaviest period of use down south where we are, NSW

We are literally at the water where thermal mass should stabilise temperature. Normally a couple of degrees warmer than a few km inland. This morning it was 5.6°C. Now at 9.45pm it's 8.5°C. The car said 9°C 20 minutes ago as we opened the garage door.

Unfortunately our 1950s block of units is not built for "extremes" of temperature. But we have done our best. Originally not even sarking under the roof tiles or any form of insulation on the plaster fibre ceiling. Just completely "nude" space.

Would be nice to get double glazing (German relatives have triple glazing). We sometimes wipe up about a cup of condensation off a window in the morning. Aluminium window frames with no thermal break aren't helpful either!

Under floor insulation as well.

My Qld Govt rebate of $1000 landed on my account for the 4/7/24 bill.

Same for my next door neighbour who got an additional $1000 for her Gold Coast unit account.

All's good in Qld.

That's great.

So good also here in WA (where electricity costs are reasonable).

So much so that a community radio station is co ordination redistribution of the rebates that some really do not need it and directed to those that are doing a bit tougher.

WA spirit at it's best.

My account was already in credit because of my solar input.  I thought that I would use the existing credit and some of the solar rebate to ease costs in other areas. But I found that one cannot transfer any of the solar rebate out of the electricity account.

Maybe I had better use some more power?confuse

Good thing Aussie 1 mentioned WA, which the OP failed to do. I think we deserve a mention since we've been propping up the Eastern States economy with our mining revenue for decades :)

The article I eventually found the information on didn't mention NT or Tasmania either.

Easily solved - just put a tarp over your panels biggrin

Got both Gas and electricity bills over past few days. Nearly fell off the chair on how low both were. Especially gas with it going constantly day in, day out with the cooler than cool weather. Not guesstirmate readings, actually saw the meter reader doing them manually

Set up banks of red blue LED lighting to grow tomatoes in the attic or basement.

We are in Queensland and have previously been able to cash in our credit and one provider automatically forwarded our credit after 12months, A friend recently asked his provider to rebate his credit and was told because it was cost of living was told not able to do it. He contacted the electricity ombudsman and was told that was incorrect so it was quickly sorted out with his provider. You could always change providers unless you are on a very good solar rebate and they have to pay it out then.

Solar input. You need to be increasing careful, you are increasingly often receiving a negative input fee during the middle of the day (being charged for input).

We now need a smart meter sub system that disconnects solar panels when you are "paid negative" funds.

As least you are not going backwards during peak times & then having to catch up to square one.

Whenarewethere it appears your initial post was very accurate.

I received a fairly heavy winter power bill this morning, as expected, as it has been really cold in my part of the world this winter so a lot of winter heating on.
Though my bill today did not contain the last of my 2023/24 $125 govt rebate amounts
So I rang my supplier and he put me on music for a while as he listened to an old conversation I had last year to have the rebate installed onto my my bill.
He came back and confirmed I was told I should receive 4 x $125 from that conversation just after the first installment SHOULD HAVE been added and was not.
He also said although they would not get the last $125 credit, as an act of goodwill he would apply that amount to my current bill.

I often wonder if these large firms actually tell us the truth? Do they get $500 but only apply only $375 and try and get away with it?

I was present when a friend rang last year to have their 4 x $125 installed but they got nothing at all last year. Did that company get the $500 rebate but not pass it on? Does the govt audit such things?

He also confirmed the May budget $300 would be applied but was late and he mentioned QLD have already got it but the rest of the states were lagging. (As per your July and August dates in your initial above - it appears your information was very accurate).

I queried why QLD get it but the rest of us don't and he responded that they are on a different system to all other states and are linked to the State Government rebates up there?

Go figure?

Looks like the $300 is on it's way for the rest of us after QLD as W.A.W.There advised.

I had the same thoughts (not only on this particular subject).

My second thought was, at precisely what point in time do the funds move from the government to the energy companies.

It is a vast amount of funds. A "considerable" amount of profit can be made on the short term & extreme short term money market can be made.

All the End User gets is a tiny bit of a discount long after the Mean Average day.

Also will be interesting at the end of this program, if due to various billing cycles, if every end user get equal funds.

I'm not cynical!

I must say that I had similar thoughts about the flow & timing of funds from Govt to the greedy profit driven companies.

But I do trust in Govt. or at least the expertise of Treasury.

I expect that the smart guys in Treasury are skilled in retaining revenue & not paying out till the last moment.  That after all, would be a large part of their business/responsibility & they are regularly audited.

I reckon that a payment/re imbursement system has been set up (I'm sure that they have standard systems in place ready to be used for situations like this) where registered & accredited power retailers submit a return, if and when their systems make a payment/discount to an end user.

The whole process would be system driven with a range of audit functions.

At least that's what my extensive (somewhat ageing) experience in large billing/payment systems would suggest.

Am I too trusting?
