2015 BT50 Problems

Hoping somebody may have more info - 2015 Diesel BT50 has brand new engine (don't ask!!) goes into a sort of Limp Mode after about an hour on the highway, no towing involved. Can still do approx. 80 kmh, but I pull off, switch off engine, take out keys, disconnect the accelerator pedal, pump it a few times, re-connect and I'll get about 30 k's further but still quite doughy. Scan Gauge showed 66 degrees trans oil temp and radiator water 85 degrees. Scan Gauge initially showed some codes (from memory 606 and 707) I cleared them and they haven't re-appeared. The car does stumble a couple of times before she starts to limp down.

I feel I have a dodgy accelerator pedal, but before I go out and buy a brand new unit at about $280,  I'll get a 2nd hand one from the wreckers and see if it makes a difference. Thought I might be able to dis-assemble old unit and give it a good clean with an electrical cleaning spray, but there are about 7 tabs you have to prize open at once and I'm not an Octopus!!  This morning I'll clean the MAF Sensor. I have checked the Inlet pipe - it is not cracked or split.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Murray

Could be an oxygen sensor, usually one in the exhaust at the engine, some 1 or 2 further down the exhaust system, buy a code reader or get a workshop to do a scan.

I suggest you buy yourself an OBDII port sender and download an app call Torque whic will talk to the sender.

I have these a couple of weeks ago the ranger had an issue with the throttle not responding correctly, I ran the error checking it threw up throttle position error, dleared the error everything back to normal, when it goes in for service next week I will get them to clean and check the voltages on the throttle position sensor.

Did you get a short motor, that is an engine without the head and all ancillary parts, or did you get a complete engine, because if you got a short engine, or at least a complete engine without the ancillary parts, like the turbo, etc, it could be your turbo solenoid, my advice to you before you start guessing is take it to a diesel engine specialist, seriously, this is what you need to do, they will test not only the solenoid, but, the ECU, the EGR, the Suction Control Valve, the mafs sensor, dpf if you have one, it can even be the catalytic convertor. How do I know this, I had a recurring limp mode with my 09 pathfinder, and they tested all those parts and found it was the turbo solenoid. It cost me just 500$ all up including the solenoid, 2 years ago.

Thank you for the comments.

An update, I bought a brand new engine from Jefferson Ford Melbourne, it is a brand new engine made in South Africa September 2023. Warranty is 12 months or 20 000k whichever comes first. We used all my auxiliary bits and pieces. What to me is amazing, is that I have nearly 1000k on the new motor and oil is still very very clean. Of course, had to replace all injectors.  $440 each !!!!

Yesterday replaced accelerator pedal assembly with one from the local wrecker, took it for a 20k run around suburban streets, no problems. A bigger run today - a 30 minute run at highway speeds, see if car plays up 'cos as mentioned previously, only plays up after an hour at highway speeds. Can't do that length till Friday when driving back to Brisbane from Bli Bli.

Yes, spoke to mechanic, before this trip to Sunny Coast, told him what was happening. See him next week to get some full scans done.

Still have the problem, usually about 50 minutes into highway speeds. Only this time it happened earlier, 25 minutes into home journey. Heat related??  Took the back roads home to Brisbane. Going in to mechanic Wednesday. See what he says.

The Ranger/BT50 3.2 engine ECU has been known to fault so with that error code you may well be up for a new computer, particularly since the second code is for the transmission control unit which is hooked into the engine management computer. Have you had the power train light come up on the dash? That would be another indication. With a new engine, did the repairer reprogram the ECU as that can be an issue?. Hope for your sake it is not the computer gone down as they are about $2600 to purchase plus fitting and programming.

Thanks for your comments Greg. I'll answer and comment as I read them . . . . . .

The only error codes were P0606 and P0707. Having a ScanGauge, I scrubbed them and they haven't re-appeared. Even after the car did the limp mode thing a 2nd and 3rd time. I also did notice the car stumbled a bit as though it was a petrol engine with ignition problems. Also, auto trans got a bit clunky

No, Powertrain module light (or any lights for that matter) has come on.

I'll ask the Mechanic if he re-programmed the ECU when I drop car into him early tomorrow morning.

A question, is the ECU the same as an ECM and / or a PCM ??

Regards.

I could likely write a book on the problems I've had with my BT50 spacecab tray back.

Its a 2012 model that I've had since new and ... it's had, gearbox replaced, motor replaced with a second hand one, turbo broke down, fuel injectors, universal joint broke, the drive shaft fell off, the clutch gear selector thing needed fixing on two separate occasions, that's what I can remember off the top of my head. Just to top off the adventure.. my dog ate the ABS wiring!

I'm now looking at getting a Hilux

Cheers

There is good and bad in all makes of vehicles (google any brand) personally on my second bt50 a 2016 and now the 2019 and have had exceptional service and reliability from both. The only issue I have had with either of them was early on with the 2016 there was a rear main seal leak, picked up at the regular service, booked in next day and finished before lunch, problem solved even before I knew it existed.
