Rear view camera

I am wanting to upgrade my rear view camera on the van as well as on the tow vehicle. What do you suggest?

Hi Jjellfern.

I had a wireless solar powered unit, nice idea but it was just rubbish.

I have now installed a Gator Trade GT 70SDTK. It comes with two cameras, one I set up by my tow bar, so I have the top view from the vehicle camera and the gator looking from the side, perfect for hitching up. The main camera is on the back off the van, it is on the whole time, you can turn it off on the monitor, but  I installed an extra switch in the dash to isolate the whole lot when not in use. It gives me a very good view of what is directly behind me, and make reversing that much easier and safer.  It is hard wired, so some mucking about and a few hours to install it all, but so worth it. The connecting cable is quite robust, the  connection plugs are weather proof and  pretty tough. It may cost a bit more than some but it will last and has a 3 year warranty. No I am not an agent for them.

I haven't owned one myself, but I have seen some positive comments about the Safety Dave reversing cameras. I bought a Mongoose reversing camera kit about a year ago. I wasn't happy with the original camera as I found it was a poor/grainy image and very narrow field of view. I bought a better quality camera with wider angle.

I have a Safety Dave full time wired camera on back of the aluminum tent and wouldn't have it any other way. I can see everything behind me at all times. In fact, I would never leave home without it when towing.

I purchased a rear view camera and screen from ebay about 12 months ago to replace a 10 year old Safety Dave.

It cost me $90.00 came with cable and attachments.

Perfectly please with it, the camera was the same as the previous one, but the original was all fogged up (after 10 years)

The screen worked perfectly and gives a clear, clean picture.

Call me a cheapskate, but after 12 months its still working like a dream.

Agree. I have a double Safety Dave with LCD display sitting on the dash. Switch between rear view and reversing when needed.

Whatever you get, the field of view is important. My rear vision one is 120 degrees and the reversing is 45 degrees.

Safety Dave does not make anything. They buy bits, put their name on them, put them in a box and double the price.

Cameras are interchangeable. Don't like what you have then swap it for another?

reversing camera only - Google Search
Cheers,
Peter

If price is your primary concern then buy from Marketplace, ebay, etc. Price alone may not be a good indicator of quality, but to me Safety Dave has the reputation for selling reasonable quality and for support.

When I bought my kit several years ago they may have been a bit dearer than other known retailers, but not a lot.

btw, your search link is for reversing camera, not rear vision as first asked by the OP.

The OP can find whatever he wants. He was not specific re view angle, if he was, put that in the search.

The point is he only needs to change the camera. The rest might be quite OK for his needs.

Cheers,

Peter

This little beauty works a treat.

https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B07H3PGBYB?ref_=ppx_hzod_title_dt_b_fed_asin_title_0_0&th=1

No interference or lag.
Easy installation yourself - can hardwire into a van power source (eg battery directly, cigarette lighter plug, or tail light (need to turn parkers on).

Screen is either plug into cigarette lighter of car or hard wire.

Replaced my fully wired Polaris unit (similar to Safety Dave) which had given up the ghost.
When not attached to the van, I got 80 m from my home before the picture on the screen disappeared - and that was without the antennas on the screen attached.
I initially tried travelling without the antennas attached, but there was too much lag due to the speed. No issues at all with them attached.
The camera is about 9m from the screen on the dash, and the signal goes through an aluminium framed van.

Less money, easy to install, and a high quality picture.
