The last few weeks when towing the van i have noticed a slight wobble. About 6months ago i replace the rear springs and struts on my 2016 Pajero and the next couple of outing it was towing great. I have a tool box on the front of the van and took out one of the 9kg gas bottles and a few other things so reduced the weight between the box and tunnel by about 20kg. could this be the cause of the wobble.. any other ideas.
The car and van look level when hooked up and i use WDH.
Describe what you mean by a slight wobble. Assuming it only occurs on the open road it sounds like a weight distribution problem as woolman said. You really need to know the weights when all loaded and ready for travel. If there is too little weight on the towball, maybe your WDH is over tensioned, and negatively affecting your handling.
The goal of a WDH is not to level the tow vehicle. If tensioning it raised the back of the Pajero to be as level as when not connected, that is probable too much. But without knowing your actual weights it is hard to be sure. If the rig is in the early stages of developing sway this is a serious situation and really should be addressed without delay. Do you know the steps to get all the relevant weights at a weighbridge?
If it happens at lower speeds it more likely points to worn bushes or wheel alignment problem.
I had a guy come out and weigh the van about 6 years ago and nothing has changed much since then. i have tried different tensioning with the WDH and still no difference. Before new rear suspension the rear was down and the steering was a bit light but after new suspension it towed great. only since i took about 20kg from front of van has this happened so that was my guess. next trip i will replace the weight and see if different. bushes were replaced about 3 years ago.
