Our caravan came with straps for those awning arms... they are fastened with velcro. Very important not to forget them, apparently awnings falling open on the road are a reason for many insurance claims.

 Hi Doug,

I had my Avan campvan for 7 years, bought one of the insect flyscreen strips several strips across) attached to a plastic runner at the top and weights in the bottom.   I cut the width of the plastic top runner (meant for a domestic door) to a width suitable for just inside and above the oval topped doorway of the Avan, move strips along in runner to suit width, can put a bit of glue in the runner if you wish (the runner is like those plastic strips they hang maps in etc).

Before fixing the strips in the runner to the required width for the doorway, cut the top end of the flexible flywire mesh to get your length, I overlapped the length of mine slightly so it would hang over the step to stop the wind blowing it inwards, then fix them to the top strip.  Hanging outside the step slightly is not a problem as you can push it in if you want to go out and close the door. 

On the back of the top plastic runner (holder) I put velcro, likewise the matching strip of velcro stuck across and over the doorway, putting it up for use you just attach to the velcro.  In the 7 years I had mine the velcro never ever lost its grip.  When hitting the road again, I would remove my screen off the velcro, roll it up and put it inside a postal tube for storage until required again.

On the subject of awning arms, Clark Rubber sell double sided velcro tape (one piece instead of two) about one inch wide, you buy it off a roll according to how much you want.

Then it is just a case of wrap it around the awning arms for travel and attach it to itself, saves a lot of hassle with rings or buckles ect and is a breeze to put on, very secure also.

We also use the "suction" holders in our shower & loo, no holes drilled, suction is great, sometimes I also take the wife ? best invention ever, multi use, dosn't need batteries !! built in recipe's, Just not to good on hooking van to truck. Back, back, back, CRASH !!! STOP ? Still i do love her

Over the last few months I have had to put two different costly products into the portable loo to break down and also deodorise the canister and still it didnt totally remove the odour.

I was talking with a couple about my problem and they kindly gave me a recipe which is not only a less expensive, it works.

Toilet Container deodorizer Or (The Loo) for the motorhome.

 * Dissolve 1 cup of Borax into 1 litre of hot water not boiling water.
Pour into a 4 litre container

Add 1 cup of pine-o-cleaner or eucalyptus disinfectant.
Add 1 cup of straight ammonia with can be cloudy ammonia.
Fill up 4 litre container or (bottle) with clean water & shake mixture.

Add this mixture to your toilet cassette at a rate of 30 mils per 5 litre capacity.

The amount of brew will vary with the temperature. >>>

My van came with awning arm straps - 2 leather dog collars, red in colour so they go faster.

I think some-one mentioned one of these a while back.  Just found this,

That looks a nice compact unit and not a bad price either. Mine takes up a bit more space ( 5 inches long) but is a steam/dry iron. Cost me $60 a couple of years ago at a quilt show in Melb.which I thought was a bit steep. Its 240v but works fine off the battery in the van. Only use it for patchwork.

I dont even use an iron at home why would I want one when traveling?

Goodness ironing. Since I've been 'on the road' I decided that ironing is against my religion. If it needs ironing I don't own it. Didn't do any ironing before going on a 39 day cruise which included dressing up for 'formal'nights.

Sheba since we have been doing this on the road thing, I have used the iron once but I take it every time. I think the trip I don't take it on will be the one I need it on.

I do like this one you have shown though. I think I will have a look at it for sure thanks. Mine is the normal size and takes up too much room for my liking. Didn't see any of these when I purchased.

No one likes ironing that I know of but there is a gene in most of us that tells us to do it mate.

Can people put hints and tips in here instead of comments...just a thought

Mummia wipes from Aldi are something I never leave home without, I use them for everything. Great make up removers and they Are gentle too. Clean surfaces, will get marks off anything, clothing, furniture, red wine off the caravan seats, hand wipes. My daughteer in law had a waiter spill gravy on her wedding dress (lots of it) and my daughter had a pack of them that we used. You could not see where the gravy had been and the reception carried on. I have them stored everywhere. Oh and u can use them to change babies too.....

We don't take an iron anywhere. I think the more people look at the wrinkles on my clothes, the less they look at the wrinkles on my face.
