If Centrelink gave you $2million..............

I read this morning about a woman who got $2mill from a Centrelink mistake, and rushed out and spent it all. Now she's been charged.

<duh>.

I'd have to ring them asap and get them to take it back.... they always get you in the end anyway.

What would you do?

Put it in a swiss bank, then go live in South America

Geez I'd be terrified theyd charge me with fraud.

But if it truly was a gift, we might spend some on a better caravan, and continue the travelling that we enjoy so much!

Just move it to a high interest account with the interest paid monthly into a separate account and wait for the stupid gov to ask for it back. Thats almost $7000 a mth @ 4% , that would do me just nice. Their mistake and their money would still be waiting for them.

You wouldn't see me for dust! I'd be on the next plan out of the country. Though PeterS suggestion might make the most sense I think the temptation to leave the country would be overwhelming for me.

I think Peter S has it right. Term deposit is currently 5.5% for 5 months. I wouldn't spend it, but they'd have to wait to get it back. No fraud there, just query time to get it sorted out.
It just goes to prove there are some dimwit "gherkins" working at Centrelink.
I wonder how long it took before they realised their error. It seems the recipient wasn't speaking up any time soon. Not smart.

They always seem in no hurry to get it back.
Some years ago I was overpaid a full fortnights pay. I rang them straight away. They can't take it back out but what they do is send you a bill with a chit on the bottom, you have to pay it at aus post. That was the case back then,. It has a barcode on the chit.
It took ages to get them to organise it but at no time did I touch that money. I knew it wasn't mine and if I spent it, it would be so much harder finding that money again to repay it.
That stupid woman knew it wasn't hers. She deserves all she gets.

Centrelink has plenty of money to get rid of...I got a call about 18 months ago asking me to take a trial worker on, I said "sorry I don't need anybody", the girl then said, "please take one we have $400,000 to get rid of by the end of the month and we have to use it or hand it back, we pay 80% of their salary, if you don't like them you can terminate them after the 3 months expires, just don't do it before that or we will be in trouble".

Apparentlt the government was dishing zillions to boost the employment figures, so why would they worry about a paltry $2million that was going to a good worthwhile causebiggrin
