thermos cooking

Hi, dawa said she cooks rice in her thermos and cooks well. That's a great idea but I was wondering would the rice cook just as well in a metal billy with water? anyone tried it?

I think you would use a billy like a saucepan Rocket. If using the absorption method you need to maintain a low heat. With a thermos it maintains the heat to continue cooking the rice. Glenda

I would have thought you would need a thermos type to keep the heat in also. I have bought a couple of that type from op shops for a couple of dollars. Must try it out with rice to see how it goes.

I learned to cook rice from an old japanese woman, and she taught me to cook it in a saucepan with a tight lid.

Same as others have mentioned with the thermos: 1 measure rice + 2 measures water. Bring to the boil.

Then - when the thermos method closes the lid, she taught me to reduce the heat to minimal- lowest possible.

This eqates to the "keep warm" capacity of the thermos.

When the water is absorbed, the rice is cooked.

On occasions when the gas has extinguished completely, and the saucepan loses heat, the process stops. So I would say that the thermos method of adding boiling water and a lid would not work in a billycan- you need heat.

I'm off to give it a try now with the little thermos thingo I bought from the op shop.

Was going to give it a try, just realised I gave my container of rice away when I left Echuca. Am trying it with Penne pasta instead. Might work.

I actually overcooked it so gave it to the dog. It shouldn't have take very long at all. its a small thermos, so I just poured the penne in, boiled the jug and then topped the thermos up with the boiling water. Probably only needed about ten minutes, I left it for about half hour while I was off doing other things.

I have one of those Pasta cooking sets that you just pour Boiling water in, put the lid on, and let stand for 10 mins.  You can also cook Asparagus in it.

Next time I'm home, I'll try and get some Pics.

Cheers,

Sheba.
