I do care, but it's a matter of freedom of choice. In the U.S., voting is not compulsory. When Reagan was elected President, only a little over 35% of the population voted.

Thats all I have to say, apart from why that the only reason, politically, we are the way we are, is because we have had two failed revolutions in Australia. One at Vinegar Hill and the Eureka Stockade. Both failed revolutions. The Australian Government will never be a Government to be Governed by the people until a revolution has occurred.

Whitlam was the average Australians PM, apparently, average Australians ousted him! What a revolution!

Would be a better country if we used the Ancient Greek idea of holding a ballot or raffle and getting 300 people to govern us. Much better results than the professional politicians we keep electing.

The main reason the Eureka rebellion failed was they went out and either got on the booze or went home. Interesting how the hero Peter Lalor became a politician later.

Interesting how the Fraser Govts 1975-1983 had carte blanche to do anything they wanted to make the country better with huge majorities and were thrown out in 8 years.

I can well understand why some refuse to vote (how ever they do it)

If one disagrees, or does not believe in the policies of a candidate or party, why then should they vote.

Freedom of choice, not really. Voting is compulsory (that in itself lacks the freedom of choice)

I am not saying that I agree with people that choose not to vote, however,

I believe that we all should have the freedom to choose whether we do or dont.

Not me, I believe that if the government represents the people, the people -all of them- have a voice.

Not just the rich, the gun owners,the lobby groups, the intelligentsia, the "go getters', the property developers, the famous, etc, but the normal people, the ordinary people, the politically un-active, the job hunters, the mums and dads, the nomads, etc.

We are the ones who's $$ don't go far enough, who's sons get sent to Afghanistan, who's children can't get into uni, who's farms get dug up for coal seam gas exploration, who's old parents can't find dementia care ...........

Yep, me, I vote, even if I vote informal because none are worth my vote, I still vote.....unless I forget, which I did do once!

Compare us with the yanks, and Bush who got in by the slimmest tiny margin of the small % of people who bothered to vote, and then marched them off to war.......... how is that "the voice of the people"?

Just an aside not a political statement because they do get out of hand quick, just like breastfeeding at poolside....but I digress.

Voting is not compulsory getting your name struck off is. I know of a few people that have always had the name crossed of the list and promptly left the building after tearing up the ballot papers and putting them in the bin supplied. They, however do not complain about how the gov runs after as they point out 'can't complain as I didn't vote for any of them.' I work on the theory of live and let live and like visiting nthese people as we never disuss politics but do have some boisterious discussions at time over many other things biggrin
