Dutch Ovens

Hi all, In this chilly weather I was contemplating how to make a warming roast when I don't have an oven in the MH - so I though I could take my cast iron dutch oven that takes about 3-4 litres, put a wire trivet in the bottom and then place the meat & veg on that and cook it on the stove top on a low heat.  Ditto with anything else that requires baking by placing a smaller heatproof dish inside on the trivet. Has anyone else tried this and what results did you get?

I have also posted this on the General Forum.

I've always figured that an oven is a hot box with shelves to keep food from coming into contact with the source of the heat. A trivet is a shelf, yeah? Then the trivet-dutch-oven combo should work. But don't blame me if it doesn't hehe. The only prob, of course, is setting the temperature.

Or you could cook outside with a camp oven trick I use,  as you really need top heat for a good roast.

I use an old frying pan with the handle cut off with Heat Beads as shown below:

OR, if you want to be nice and warm, buy an OzPig and use Ironbark.

 I carry in the Campervan:

- 2 frying pan bases

- 1 Heat Beads Starter Chimney & fire lighters

- tongs for the Heat Beads

- Mair Lid Lifter

- 3 Lodge camp ovens 10",  8" and 6",  a couple of trivets

- 1 Volcano Collapsible Stove

OzPig stays home but has occasional weekend trip outings.

The 10" Lodge camp oven can be bought online from Cabela's.

Really good buy with shipping to Australia:
