Ecopot or any thermal cooker inner pots

I am thinking of getting an Ecopot.  They are on sale on TVSN for $250 which includes an extras pack.

Has anyone used the  inner pots of a thermal cooker as everyday saucepans?  I wonder if they are tough enough to withstand daily use.  Would make the thermal cooker more versatile.

We went to the Caravan & Camping Show with the intention of buying a Shuttle Chef - the same sort of appliance - the people there who were supposed to be demonstrating it need to find new jobs - they were dreadful! We went and looked at the Dreampot, watched their demonstrations and tasted the food that came straight out of the Dreampot. We bought one. I love it and I often take it out of the motorhome and use it in the house - it's brilliant, I have never had a failure. They send you recipes once a month and if you have any questions they are only too happy to help.

We have an eco pot. Use the larger pan (like a boiler)  for soups and stews on the stove top - no different to a normal pan, in fact, is suitable for induction cook top as well.  Small pan ditto.  Go for it.

Agree with you re the Dreampot .... Use it everywhere, on stove, on open fire, in the van, and of course, as what it was designed for ... A Dreampot.  Only thing I dont like in it is breads etc.   prefer the oven or when camping the BabyQ.  You can also get recipes from their Facebook Page.

Talking of the thermal cookers - have been given an Ecopot - want to know has anyone cooked a cake in one??? Can you help me with times etc?

Tried to do banana bread - but it just would not cook - maybe I didn't boil it on the stovetop long enough? I boiled for about 25 minutes, didn't put the small pan with the cake mix in till water was well boiling. If it is going to need half to three quarter hours on stove top, not much of a saving timewise is it?

I have made the scones from the little recipe book you get with the pot, and also cooked silverside - both very successful - but thought a cake occasionally might be a good idea.

Any help or advice?

Try this one Jules, I have not tried it, but it comes from the ecopot recipe club.

 Banana Bread

Ingredients

2 cups plain flour
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 cup caster sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1/3 cup oil
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 ripe bananas mashed butter and honey, to serve

Instructions

In a mixing bowl sift flour, baking powder and cinnamon. Stir in the sugars. In a separate  bowl, combine the eggs, oil and vanilla. Add contents  of both bowls and add mashed  bananas. Fold until just combined and do not over mix. Place in a loaf pan and rest for 20 minutes.  Place bread  tin on a trivet in large inner pot. Fill pot with water 1/2 way up the side of loaf pan. Bring pot to boil. Simmer pot for 30 minutes. Transfer pot to Ecopot, lid on, after 20 minutes.

Cooking time 4 hours

Handy hint

Remove bread  from loaf pan and allow to sit for 10 minutes.

Serve with plenty of butter and lashes of honey. Also this can be made as a gluten free recipe,  using gluten free plain flour and baking powder.

Thanks Dunmowin - that is what I did wrong, thought it would cook in the upper pot over boiling water, have now got some potato cans, and will use them next time, directly into the large pot with water - can stand the tins (3 will fit nicely) on egg rings I reckon.

Your banana bread sounds delicious - will have to try that!

Thanks to everyone else as well.

Had a scone "cookoff" the other day with another camper, she made wholemeal, bit crumbly and dry, mine I made with half milk and half soda water (recipe said lemonade - didn't have any) - light as a feather and delicious!!! Not bragging, but!!!!

Hey Jules's
I have decided that I'm going to add a Pressure Cooker to my camping gear..

We use one of the new Pressure/slow/rice cookers.. It's cooked a Lot of Meals in it since we got it.. Soup's, stews.. the worst cut's of Meat have turned up Absolutely Melt in your mouth.. With only 30min cooking..

So that is where My thought's of getting an old Fashion Pressure cooker..

Pressure Cooker

That is the type I'm after..

Juergen - (SnowT) - Yeoeleven (John) has that brand of pressure cooker - 2L - and it works a dream - I have used it for silverside and it was delicious!

The prices where you are looking (Kitchenware Direct) are the best I have found - easy to deal with.
I was going to get a pressure cooker, but someone gave me the Ecopot, and I am still learning with it - storage space is the problem, in a motorhome you can't have too many "things" - I like things that have more than one use - the inner pots from the Ecopot can be used as saucepans as well, my microwave rice cooker is also my mixing bowl for scones, bread, cakes etc.

This could be worth a look

http://negergy.com.au/products/energy-efficient-slow-cooker-thermal-cooker

$80 delivered compared to $250, quite a price difference.

Cant see there being much of a quality difference, no electrics involved, its really only a very large thermos designed to contain a cooking pot.

Hi Juergen.  I've been seeing those exact Pressure Cookers in the local Op-shops lately.  Last one was only  yesterday.

Cheers,

Sheba.
