Hi Baggie - we have used a generic brand of nappy/clothes soaker for over two years - have never had a problem - as you say it is so cheap - did you know the active ingredient is sodium percarbonate - the ideal % of this should be over 30% - the current one I have is 34% and it works extremely well. I don't emulsify the powder - just put a capful in when it is empty, small amount of water activates it - depending on use, we find about a capful every day works well to break down "product", including toilet paper - I only use a 2 ply paper, often the generic brand, and find it disintergrates well - we are in a motor home, and sometimes when travelling the swishing motion can set up a bit of odour, a capful in the cassette via the bowl, will fix the smell.

Morning Jules, yep, the generic brand works just as well if not better than Napisan.

As an additional tip, we also add about a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil as well as the soaker, the combination works very well at keeping odour to a minimum. smile

Re the eucalyptus oil - do you mean PineOclean or real genuine eucalyptus oil?.....and if it's oil, wouldn't it float on the surface, plus why should it not get on the seals.

Genuine eucalyptus oil, its for odour control, the fact that it floats on the surface is what makes it so effective.

Re the seals, no idea, however you would have to make a bit of an effort to get any of the oil on the seals. smile

what about olive oil for your seals , there was a video about the seals in a post about thetford dunny light not working. as most of us would already have it in pantry

Eucalyptus oil can damage the seals - it is not an "oily" oil, if you know what I mean - olive oil, or vegetable oil (both have thicker consistency than eucy) will keep your seals "healthy". (Didn't know what other word to use there) biggrin biggrin

we found a 2kg container of "nappy soaker" at the reject shop for $5 and it has about the same amount of active ingredient as the rest of them.
works ok in ours over the last couple of years.

Would you believe Eucalyptus Oil is classified as a dangerous good under the legislation.

Also it is almost impossible to mix with water,, so I wouldn't just add it in a raw form to toilet holding tanks as it floats on top and will come into contact with rubber if driving with tanks in use ie containing liquid.

We use Pine o clean eucalyptus oil as it is diluted to be at a safe level IMHO to be sold in the supermarket, and yes I believe it does float to the top and aid odour suppression.

Me too.

I have an eye dropper in a styrofoam slab with cut outs that also holds the Eucalyptus bottle, a spray can of olive oil, a bottle of tea tree oil and a container of Duck or Harpic toilet bowl cleaner. All held in a cheap plastic basket. It lives in the vanity cupboard along with the spare toilet paper & the coles 'nappy san' equivalent.

Been using the nappy san stuff since around 2001. Though I have been thinking of trying a bottle of the commercial stuff just to see the difference.

Before emptying the casette I give the bowl a clean out with the Harpic stuff.

I use hot water poured over the powder in the casette & then an eyedropper full of the 100% pure eucalyptus oil. A spray of the inside of the bowl with olive oil to make it slippery & some to lubricate the seals.

A spray of air freshener & fold the end of the toilet paper roll into a point .... All I need then is a paper 'courtesy' tape across the seat & it would be as good as in a good hotel!

(Might be fun to stretch a bit of glad wrap across the bowl for a joke ... but not game & I'd have to clean up the mess)

Eucalyptus or tea tree oil are disinfectants. They work in a different manner to sodium perchlorate. They will counter the action a little by killing off a little of the composting the perchlorate is achieving. Best to use some other scent that is not a disinfectant.

Its not meant to be a disinfectant Peter, its used as a deodorizer and does the job well, approx half a teaspoon along with the SPC after each empty.

As I said below have been using it for years and the seals are still fine. smile

Just a quick tip, don't use the Oxi Action Boosted Nappysan as is activates the oxygen and will blowup a sealed system as we found out. Couldn't open the trap and found that the Oxi action had pressurized the bowl, was a bit worried for a wile, had to depress the flap quite forcefully to release the pressure.

Stick to plain old "Home Brand Clothes and Nappy Soaker" - currently about $2.49 at Woolworths - small capful as needed works a treat, few drops of 100% eaucalyptus oil, after three years our seals are good, our cassette is fine, just rinse with plain water when emptying, comes up clean.

Wonder if a few drops of Eucalyptus oil in the Nappy San container would work before added to cartridge?
Aldi had a special buy nappy San with Eucalyptus which has been the best we have used to date unfortunately it did not appear with the latest Eucalyptus products out last week :(

How much did you put in ? Only need to use a capful, maybe daily.
