Installation of Planar Diesel Heater in Coromal

Have finished the installation and thought I'd share with whoever was interested.  First issue was the heater bolts were not long enough to get thru the floor, so attached it to the optional plate and secured this to the floor.  Also ordered a muffler which didn't quite fit the exhaust pipe.

Had a stand welded up and attached it to the rear bumper.  Put the controller under the double bed (where all the other electronics are located).

Well done mate. Your set us is a little different than our but no doubts achieves the same result.
We did add a silencer to our unit. Our diesel tank is attached to the inside wall of the boot. Can not hear the ticking noise. Guess it could be the silencer.
Looks like a nice warm winter ahead for us.

Put diesel into the tank and fired it up - all good. Pump does have a tick, but not noticeable inside the van. But will try to relocate it away from the metal sub frame.
Fitted a cover under the floor where the exhaust and diesel are attached to the unit. Idea is to reduce any moisture entering the van if driving in rain etc.

Hi glen, Great looking job and very impressed with your photos. I am looking at putting in a heater, looked at Planar as only half the price of others, couple of questions , could the fuel tank, pump and filter be fitted in a tool box on the back? What size is the standard fuel tank that comes with the unit ? Do you require two out lets ? Does the muffler make a lot of difference ? Do you think a bigger muffler off a small engine would work better? I know at night any noise seems twice as loud.

Gday Len

Have relocated the pump and there is now no ticking noise from the pump.

Yes, Tank and pump could be located in a tool box - tank can be horizontal or vertical although looking at the outlet pipe, it might not be able to suck the bottom half diesel if horizontal. Size is about 375mm high (need more space to get cap off to fill), 275mm wide and 100mm deep, but then there is the spout/cap. Ideally it is designed for vertical use.

The 2 outlets under the van are because the fan circulates air inside the van, whereas the motor sucks air from outside and expels it via the exhaust/muffler. Don't know how noisy it is without the muffler as I installed the muffler before initially turning it on. Read on one of the forums that they did require a muffler. The muffler they sell is quite small, so I think you could use one off another motor.

Make sure you wire it directly to the battery with a fuse and heavier wire

As Ken says - use the wire harness that comes with the unit - it already has a fuse in the heavy positive wire.

BTW - I asked supplier what regular maintenance unit requires and he said none. But I made sure I can check on the filter easily and can replace it when reqd.

Happy and warm travels!

Bought mine on ebay. Do a search for planar. I purchased the 2kw unit with 2 lots of ducting and tank - was $800, but see it has gone up to $860 inc postage.
