Can' find any reference to the Kelly Kooka I am talking about using the search function. Only a home made one.

Looks great, I bought a steel /tin one years ago called an enviro billy. Light a fire in the base and it heats the billy thru the chimney. Works very well. I like the idea of the hobo fire attachment.

Like countless others, I've been using the banned cookers for years, and I absolutely love them... they're just so damned convenient. I tried to buy a second one recently, which is when I discovered they'd been banned.

I just had a search on fleabay and found that they're still available in the UK and elsewhere. So I googled the reason for the ban here and found that the issue is that if you put something too heavy on them... say a massive pot of stew, or a 20 litre drum of water, they tend to warp which allows the gas to leak at the canister connection point... and boom.

Rather than ban something that's perfectly safe if used sensibly, maybe they should ban morons from breeding furious After all... it's just natural selection at work when stupid people kill themselves biggrin

But, the powers that be have exercised their right to deny ours... so, alternatives are needed for these handy little cookers that will be missed by many.

I've ordered one of the units in the link above and will report on it when it arrives from China... if I'm still in one piece that is wink

Hi Graham, it takes the same butane cans as the one that was banned. With this unit, you push and twist to lock the can on, the same as a bayonet light bulb.

We have been advised that the single burner butane cookers will eventually be back on the market, after extensive safety checking. In the mean time, I am sausage sizzle without!

Never did throw my 2 away. Used the one in the Campervan this morning to boil water for Coffee for the drive home today. The problem was caused by idiots who don't read, and follow, directions which are included when you buy the item.

Grahamg, the enviro billy sounds like it might be similar. Does it work the same way as the Kelly Kettle? What is its fuel?

Just go to youtube and search 'Kelly kettle' and you'll see a bunch of vids come up showing it in use. About half way down you'll see one showing the use of the 'Hobo Stove' accessory which is what you'd use for cooking rather than the 'Kettle' for heating water.

Me personally, I don't think I'd be spending money on the Kelly gear, it seems like a lot of money for what it is, and no kind of substitute for the convenience of a butane cooker.

No, haven't used one, but you may as well light a fire in a tin can from what I saw... but you can certainly cook with one.

The enviro billy , nothing like the quality and style of the kettle, but it works great. Easy to light , you just use the twigs and small sticks laying around, you could even use fire starters and heat bead. The central flue is like a rocket stove and draws the heat up and keeps the fire going. A lot quicker than just lighting a fire.
If I had the spare cash I would buy some of the Kelly Kettles. i like the idea of using ir as stove as well using the hobo stove, I will try something like this on my billy. Will also try making a Pot support and see how it goes?
I think it main benefit would be heating water as the kettle has been designed to do it quickly. As for a heating a fry pan it would work well, again just using twigs and small sticks but I think it is too expensive to do this. As someone above in post said you could use a tin can. This would be the rolls Royce of tin cans. For this you could build a rocket stove or a wood gas stove ( google youtube).
