Good Ideas

Some of these ideas you will already know........

The simplest way to slice a bunch of cherry tomatoes is to sandwich them between two plastic lids and and run a long knife through them all at once.

Keep brown sugar soft by storing with a couple of marshmallows.

Install a regular coat rack low down on the wall to hang shoes off the floor.

Create a thrifty watering can by punching holes in the top of a used milk bottle.

Remove pet hair from furniture and carpets with a squeegee .

Water straight from the tap becomes cloudy when frozen.  To make ice cubes crystal clear, allow a kettle of boiled water to cool slightly and use this to fill your ice cube trays.

Use a large muffin tin to cook stuffed capsicums in the oven, it will keep them upright.

To prevent potatoes budding place an apple in the bag.

Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to the water when hard boiling eggs to make the shells easy to peel off.

WD40 can be used to removed crayon marks off any surface.

To tell if eggs are fresh, immerse them in a bowl of water.  Fresh eggs will lie at the bottom while stale eggs will float to the surface.

To clean a wooden chopping board, sprinkle on a handful of Kosher salt and rub with half a lemon.  Rinse with clean water and dry.

Use ice cubes to lift out indentations made by furniture in your carpet.

Prevent soil from escaping through holes in the base of flowerpots by lining with large coffee filters.

To sharpen scissors, cut through sand paper.

Use rubber bands to help open a jar easily.  Place one around the jar lid and another around the middle of the glass.  The rubber provides friction to stop your hands from slipping.

Store bed sheets inside their pillow cases for easy storage and access.

Drop a couple of denture cleaning tablets into the toilet bowl at night to clean off stubborn stains.

Use egg cartons to store delicate xmas decorations.

Use a can opened to open those annoying blister packs.

Use a cut potato to remove a broken light bulb.

Use chalk to remove grease stains from clothes.  Rub white chalk on affected area and wash as normal.

Freeze grapes to chill white wine, without watering it down.

Wrap rubber bands around the end of coat hangers to prevent clothes from slipping off.

Great tips June- although do not use cut potato to remove broken light bulbs because there is always a live active in the ceiling fitting even when light is turned off at switch, and potatoes are full of water (one flash and you're ash). Correct method is to utilise insulated radio pliers (pointy ones), other wise totally isolate all power at household mains switch

Did you know you can buy a special tool to open those annoying packs - problem is you need the tool to get the tool out of the blister packs!!!!!

Good thinking Colin, don't think I would use a potato either, it doesn't sound safe to me either.

Know what you mean Jules, don't know how many times I've hacked at those damn packs with scissors and knives, even swearing at them didn't help either!

Possum3 - pretty sure that is wrong.....the active is switched OFF so the light fitting should be safe ------however that presumes it is wired correctly etc etc.

Have to agree to take every precaution.

Modern wiring has Active from supply direct to loop terminal on light bayonet fitting which then proceeds down to switch. www.dlsweb.rmit.edu.au/toolbox/electrotech/toolbox1204/resources/04diagrams/04lighting/05loops.htm
Agree with Hako "should" be safe if switched off unfortunately with active at loop means live power always present also must consider if two way switching is fitted, fan fitted to light etc.
