Yep after filling with terrible calcium rich SA water we have flushed and cleaned with vinigar to remove calcium build up . Especially in elect jug . Some lemon or lime juice helps too . Food acid does its job .

White vinegar can be used to clean lots of things, especially jugs and washing machines. Have used it often. Haven't thought about the toilet cassette though. That's a good thought.

I have heard that coke will clean toilet bowls also
Umm Doug that's before you drink the coke too not after just to clear that up

I think that was many moons back Woody, mate, before they changed the formula.

I drink my coke with bourbon so with the mix of coke and alcohole should make for a stronger cleaner. Only thing is I would have to drink it first cos no way would I waist it.

I have quoted this many times to people, but its a first on this forum. Acid removes minerals, i.e. calcium. All of the above are mild acid solutions. Alkaline (bi-cab) removes organic, human waste, food and fat. When cleaning wine tanks and equipment we used an acid - phosphoric then an alkaline - caustic - and then an acid rinse citric to neutralize. It all depends on what it is you are cleaning.

I think the question that needs to be asked is - what will the vinegar etc., do to the dump points systems -some of them are septic types, not connected to mains sewage lines. Before I used anything like that to clean out the toilet cassette, I would try to find the answer to this first.

Have seen too many dump points closed because of products or mixtures some people have used, as well as those wet wipes available these days to use instead of toilet paper - paper dissolves - wet wipes don't!

An industry trade group this month revised its guidelines on which wipes can be flushed, and has come out with a universal stick-figure, do-not-flush symbol to put on packaging, reports SF Gate. (Same thing goes for actual baby wipes and cleaning wipes).

A city in Minnesota is suing six makers of flushable wipes, since the wipes cause so many problems in sewer systems. Officials say the wipes dont degrade after they are flushed and end up costing the city thousands, if not millions, of dollars of damages.

I agree with you about the wipes Jules.

Bloody things should be banned.

I don't reckon vinegar would hurt dump points though. Doesn't seem to hurt the gut so shouldn't be a problem for septic systems.

Yes it's a food acid, Anything we eat will be fine . Agree with them wipes . I had to unblock our black water pump . What a "mission".. . Hot weather , black water running down your arms . No wander plumbers charge !! Took days and many showers to rid the smell !! Nothing like this odour when sitting down to nice roast .. Sheesh !

I agree with wipes too but they were never mentioned in my question.

I also agree that vinegar should be harmless but I would never use it and put in a septic tank or drop loo or similar. I think a lot worse would be sent down the storm water pipes and possibly out to the sea life.

My question was to see what would happen to the plastic and if anyone uses vinegar for the purpose.

Wholesale vinegar comes in 20 litre plastic containers.

We still have one with about 6 litres in it that was bought in April 2009.

Nothing wrong with either the vinegar or plastic container, so I don't think vinegar would harm a septic tank, long drop or any other type of toilet.

I use vinegar for all my house whole cleaning including the toilet. Have been doing it for years as well as cleaning the washing machine, jugs and burnt pots. Have had NO problems with my septic because of it. I also ensure only the minimum of grease and chemicials enter the system. Wipes are disposed of in the general rubbish.

I was told that using the napisan formula will only work if using toilet for urine and excrement. If using for urine only, then white vinegar should be used.
