Cleaning up Australia.

G'day!

I started travelling this beautiful island home of ours at the age of 17. (1960) In a lot of cases, my job, as an interstate driver took me to all the places that are now part of the "bucket list" for many of the younger generation. The Birdsville, and Strezleki tracks, (when they were tracks) Gibb River road, Cape York, The Nullabour, (Eyre Highway)  and most of our deserts. As the tourist traffic increased, so did a lot of the mess along the highways and byways. Commonly called "bush daisys" or "desert carnations". In fact in most cases, it is toilet paper. Honestly, is it that hard to carry a small trowel, or shovel, and bury everything. Yes, apparently it is. You may not have contributed to the mess, but it is easy to see it from the road. Seriously, does anyone know "Makka" or any other radio personality who has the clout to, on the radio, ask Sorbent, Kleenex and any other toilet paper manufacturer, to start produceing the tissue in greens, browns or ever camoflarge colours, (for the 4X4 crowd). This way, the results of someone, being too bloody lazy to dig a small hole, wouldn't be so evident to the passing traffic. Anyway, that's what I reckon. Regard.  Pipes

Hello pipes

Not being into four wheel drive travel, then I do not know what the rubbish situation is, on the outback roads

I can only say that there are people, and that there are people
Hopefully education of doing the right thing, will eventually win out

you don't need to be into 4x4 travel to notice the problem
but on the other hand if you see the "bush daisys or desert carnation " you know to tread carefully

Hello dogbox

Like yourself, I do notice the problem on long stretches of sealed roads, and as you say, at least we know the place where we are not allowed to step on

But...

I would assume that most people going from A to B on the sealed roads, would not be carrying a shovel
I would also assume that most people travelling on four wheel drive roads, would be carrying a shovel
I therefore agree with pipes, that some people (who carry a shovel) are just lazy

I do not know the answer, but perhaps a biodegradable toilet roll, kept in a sealed plastic container, which breaks down when exposed to the atmosphere, (if such a thing is feasible), would be handy to keep in the vehicle, in lieu of the loo paper

I often wonder (no disrespect intended), why there are no toilets at the truckie roadside rest areas, as to the best of my knowledge, they do not carry a port a loo
