This is a topic that got some peoples juices flowing and such a minor thing.................
Personally, I don't like the self serve, and will generally wait until there is a manned checkout available if possible. If I only have one or 2 items, I will hit the unmanned.
At one of the major chains earlier in the week, there were 2 manned open with about 3 trolleys lined up at each waiting, including us - within 2-3 minutes there were another 2 manned opened in quick succession. Obviously a Customer Service oriented Manager/Supervisor keeping an eye on flow through.
Another dislike is trolleys left in the middle of parking bays, not returned to trolley areas, and trolleys hundreds of meters away from the supermarket...............
I you have to trolley your groceries home if you live near the supermarket, then a least keep it at home and bring it back next trip - don't abandon it on the street?

I agree with you Santa, why would anyone want to leave a trolley full of goods for someone else to have to put back on the shelves (cold goods will have to be thrown out). The simplest solution would be to find a shop that caters more for what your idea is of proper customer service. If a lot of others who feel this way vote with their feet then the loss of customers will affect the supermarket owners a lot more than just spitting the dummy and walking out leaving a full trolley. You don't have to like the shop or a particular chain but at least have some respect for those who have to make a living by working there. By the way on this coast stores like Bunnings, BigW, Woolies etc. often open their returns counter to clear people when there is a rush as it's quicker than calling someone to stop what they're doing and open up for only a short period - it's not actually special treatment.
You can shop at a shop that give great service and charge a higher price and they make you feel special , I shop at Woolworth's go through the self-serve and never have problem with the person who serve me .
Did our usual shop today and we use the checkout, always get good service and light banter with the person on the checkout.
I like that they pack the groceries into our supplied bags mainly because if I did it you can bet I'd be doing it wrong.
Tried the self service once and kept on stuffing it up, the very helpful assistant eventually did most of it for us, thank heavens, so it's back to the operated checkout.
Our only dislike would probably be trollies left in the car park instead of in the supplied bays.
Happened to me today in Woolworths Katherine The old checkout chick coughed from the bottom of her wheezy lungs in to her hands several times then continued on handling our fruit and veg as she scanned. Continued coughing as the next punter was served.
Wiped everything over with a vinegar solution when we got back to the van. Becoming very reluctant to buy cooked meats from the supermarket deli section the way some of their staff hygiene is. Cheers Daz

hi dazz49. I would have left the groceries and walked out. If i see that hygiene is not adhered to at the deli i saY so. If no gloves -i ask them to put them on. coughing - i would go to another shop Or go without. Self serve ice creams at ice cream shops are the worst. I watch them serve someone else first, If they put there hands all over the cone i walk out the shop. When u have a low immunity it puts a whole new slant on shopping n eating out.

You need a hazmat suit and self contained breathing apparatus to attempt to get into woolies at all there!!!
Trolleys round the car parks would be the biggest bug.
Followed by self serve.Never use them on Principal.
and the full trolley in the 12/15 item queue.
I normally say something to them...
Trouble is they too convenient.
and you never know where all the different shops are in a strange town
to buy all your required items. Unfortunately
I left a trolley once.
But after having to go elsewhere and fill another one I thought.
Whoops.
That was dumb.
They do ask for trouble with the self serve though.
too easy to put in bags without registering more than a couple.
I saw a bloke do that one day recently.
Told girl.
Answer...
Too much trouble to get security here.
I said, I'll get him. "no thank's. don't worry about it"
Scuse me?????.
Somebody needs educating.
A bloke in the area all day would slow a lot of that.
Specially if he had a baseball bat in hand hey.
That's what thieves need.
Broken or removed fingers. NO Liftee..
Word would get around.
Just had a similar experience at the green shed. Self serve not being used by anybody with one staff member supervising. No registers open except for the service desk with a very long queue. Asked the supervisor to open a register and was told she couldn't. We only went in to buy epoxy glue, but ended up with plants, fertilizer and a sprayer as well all left on the counter in disgust at the lack of service. Bought the glue at Repco cheaper and the garden items at about the same price at the local garden supply. Last trip to Bunnings for us.
