I Hate when Selfish People take up more than one site at a Free Camping Place

We are travelling around the Eyre Peninsula and thought we stop at Lipson Cove just north of Tumby Bay and stay at the free camping place. Each spot has a site number and there is an honesty box or pay Tumby Bay council of $10.00pn. When we checked out the sites....each caravan is taking up 2 sites and when I talked to the selfish people they said did not pay and wanted the side on view so they can have uninterrupted views of the white sandy beach and the ocean. Another selfish person said it was not busy, so why not take 2 spots. So we could not find any spot for our caravan, continue driving and complain to Tumby Bay Council. These people are preventing other tourists/ campers at camping at this wonderful spot . We were willing to pay the $10pn for this beautiful scenery and only use 1 site. Not very Happy!

If you want some sort of justice then you should have taken some photos of them, and their rego number, and then go to the council

Obviously those travellers are Grey Nomads in name only

Edit to say that within about 70 kilometres of Bunbury WA, we have some national parks, were you put the money in an envelope then into the box, with a portion of the envelope on your vehicle or post marker site number

The ranger comes at least once a day

Lipson is a classic for people taking up more than one spot.

From my observation it is not Grey Nomads that do this but more the Weekend Warrior types generally.

The area is poorly designed and is not policed regularly by the council.

The view and the beach is spectacular and if the sites had been laid out so that you may park your van / rv parallel to the beach rather than at 90 degrees to it, it would have been a lot better.

I wont go there for that reason....

Cowleys Beach is about 10 ks further north and although it has no toilets it is a great spot and is free, meaning no cost at all.

Gday...

confuse Where is the 'free' camping spot at Cowleys Beach - I assume you mean the one in NQ north of Mission Beach?

I was there a couple of weeks ago ... I didn't see anywhere to camp - the only place to stay was in the VERY EXPENSIVE van park with basic, and old, facilities. cry

Cheers - John

[edit: rocky not with it this morningcry I just used Google maps to realise there is a Cowleys Beach in SA. Obviously, disregard my query.] no cry

Cowleys Beach is in SA on the east coast of the Eyre Peninsula between Tumby Bay to the south and Port Neill to the north.

There is plenty of room at Cowleys...not like Lipson which is more like a caravan park. Lipson does have a toilet which I think, from memory, is a long drop.

Both sites are in Wiki camps.

I am not familiar with the one referred to above in RL's post

 They say "familiarity breeds contempt"

Because I live close to "Cowleys beach" I have always known it by that name.

A quick look on Wiki Camps has revealed that it as listed as "Cape Hardy" with the Cowley option.

A search on Wiki camps for Cowleys Beach will only bring up the Qld site So Cape Hardy is what you need to find it Or do a broard search from Port Neill or Tumby Bay on rhe Wiki Map pages.

Thanks everyone for your comments.
I did complain to Tumby Bay Council...all they can do is check out Lipson Cove more often and fix the honesty box, as it has been vandalised again. We end staying at Tumby Bay caravan bay. Another great few camping spot is Cowell Motorhome Park, on the east side of Eyre Peninsula, SA (between Whyalla & Tumby Bay. South end of Cowell on Wellington-Beach Road. Great spot but need to be self contained, but only 1 drive to town and 24hr public tiolets.

I can see how this happens ? They arrive and there's only 2 or 3 campers there . So it's human nature to use as much room as you want . BUT next morning possibly Saturday ? there's 30 campers wanting same area ., Oops !! It's not total ignorance . I would kindly ask for some space ? Then see what their reaction is ?

We stopped at Bulladela on the way home and the prime spots along the river were available,so we reversed in,but we know we were lucky just timed it right, any way another van came in and set up parallel to the river ,and a motorhome came in after him and dI'd the same ,are these people dumb, stupid, selfish, looking for trouble, think they own the place, only care about themselves...

My guess would be stupid biggrin
