This operating system is starting to give me the sh-ts. We (I) obviously own the hardware, but they seem to consider they have rights to take it over, and change it when ever it suits them.
Noron virus checker now won't work, adobe PDF reader won't work. The system is always down loading stuff I don't want. Yet I have no say in the matter.
I am on wireless internet and pay premium for all of this. I have to up grade my laptop, and this alone is going to drive me to buying an Apple. That is assuming they arn't the same.
What ever happened to an operating system on disks? just load what you want.
I believe this whole thing is not for you and I, but is to benefit third party advertisers etc., so they can shove their wares in your face.
All I want is a basic word processor, and spread sheet, maybe graphics art program. Nothing else, but I know if I buy a machine I will get heaps of stuff I haven't asked for.
One survey I won't mind doing is one from Microsoft!
The wife has an apple and I have a Samsung. There is no way I would buy a Apple after trying to deal with the wifes one. I have windows 7 on lap top and that is no more problem than any previous windows system.
Now you have me confused, especially as I need a new laptop and they only come with windows 10. Maybe i will ask for a laptop with only a dos system.
Hi iana, don't change to Apple if you think you won't need to do any updates I am always being sent OS or software updates unfortunately I have 2 iPhones, an iPad and an iMac which all go through my 8gig a month wireless router. Last month I downloaded IOS updates on the 2 phones, a system update on the iPad which was only a week old and a new version of iTunes on my iMac, my data ran out only half way through the month. I know 8gig is not a lot but like you I only really want to do the basics plus have email and a maybe do a little browsing. A lot of the smaller updates are for security reasons or to fix bugs and don't normally take too much of your data but some of the OS updates can be quite large and if you don't do them eventually it can effect programs that you are running. Right now there is a whole new macOS called Sierra waiting for me to download in the App store (free update) but I can see that it's 4.88gig in size so I have chosen not to go ahead with it at least until I can get feedback from other users.
Look on the bright side if you do buy Apple you won't need to keep updating your Nortons antivirus, in 25 years I have never run a virus protection program on my Apple machines and I have never had a virus (touch wood). With Windows it is critical that you always keep everything updated as that is what most of these viruses are written for - Apple with less than 20% of the PC market is largely left alone.
Yes I have the same 8 gig of data allowance, and then $10 per gig after that. I have turned off everything I can find to stop down loads but Microsoft feel they have exclusive rights to just take over.
If these changes to the operating system could be sheduled so that one could take their computer to a "Hot spot", then down load, that would at least be polite. Even the editor for this forum doesn't work properly, and the spell checker is non existant.

hi iana, doing updates at a hotspot. I never thought of that. Brilliant idea.
Iana, who are you with ? I am with Telstra as soon as I exceed the 8 gig they slow it down to a point where it becomes completely unusable, I can't just buy an extra gig I have to move up to their next package which is 15 gig. Originally I had 4 gig for $39/mth I doubled it to 8 gig for $49/ a mth the next step is the 15 gig for $109/mth what a rip off. Woolman if Microsoft hadn't copied Apple with their Windows program you would still be using that very unfriendly MS Dos system that I had the displeasure of using back in the 80s at TAFE.
I don't know about Microsoft but Apple will at least ask if you want to do the update which means that theoretically you could wait until you got to a hotspot to do it.

I'm with Telstra, and yes the Apple system does, it sounds, let you down load at a time and place you choose. I still have to do research on this. I need a art editing program to run on the apple first, but not as big as Photoshop.
I have a Program called "Paint Shop pro" designed here in Aus., but was brought out by Adobe. Cost me then about $450. My copy of an old Auto-cad will have to go. Apart from that I think the Apple machine comes with a suitable word processor and spread sheet, and with a few other apps that's all I need.
Gooday,
I had "Microstuff" for 10 years and had so many headaches continually, our Daughter bought me an Apple, and after a week I wondered what I had done, after 3 weeks I asked myself repeatedly why did I not go to Apple 10 years earlier.
The thing with Apple is it os so much more logical, the first week I was trying to overthink it like the Windows rubbish, just the best thing I have done.
If you haven't tried Widows 10, you are in fro a shock, you think 7 etc was bad, 10 is an absolute nightmare, half the meaningful menus are gone and you have to start to really search for anything you were familiar with on earlier versions.
When anyone buys a new computer these days we all get programmes we don't want along with a working system we don't like and not only that we longer have control of It. Change the settings and Windows 10 will change it back. Someone, some company, is studying every thing we do, they say to help improve our experience. Let's not forget the government is peeking also.
The truth as I see it is more rapidly then ever before technology is advancing at an incredible rate. We have computers that respond verbally to our voice commands. We have V.R. head sets, holograms are just around the corner the list goes on.
Like most people I am usually very comfortable in any situation that i am familiar with, one that is old hat so to speak and change is not very welcome If it means I will lose that. The Windows mob are telling us and directing us in one direction, the future of computing. Like it or not there is no stopping it. The change like I said is more rapid then ever before and disagree with its ways and systems as much as we like we are not going to stop it. Change is going to happen.
Before you go to any expense download a program called spyhunter. I purchased a licence for mine because it picked up a shed load of spyware which was making the system slow and flakey. Got rid of the threats and run it weekly now. No more Windows issues at all and media servers work faster and audio / video playback don't stutter any more.
Iana - when I got this latest Mac I also bought Microsoft Office for it (Excel, Powerpoint, Word etc.) Before I retired whatever I was doing at work on a Windows machine I could take home and carry on using my Mac or vice versa. There are probably thousands of apps in the app store in every different category including drafting and graphic design you just download the ones with the features that you want - just out of curiosity I went looking at graphic design apps and they were priced between $10 and $150. If you are happy using Windows try what Cloak suggested as an Apple machine will cost you more than a comparable Windows machine because I believe that Apple have never licensed anyone else to mass produce their computers.
I am having the same problems. I am seriously considering going Linux. I have dabbled in it previously. It loads fairly easily if you have a bootable disk with the distribution in it. There are Linux magazines in the newsagents with disks. If you go for Ubantu you can load, set it up and operate it just using a mouse, you don't have to know how to use the command line. You can get it online from here.

Totally agree why do Ms try to fix what's not broke.
'cos it is broke. There are always faults in OS's and there are also faults that are not even known to be a faults until some creative hacker works out a way it can be. It's really like an arms race.
If MS, Apple etc just leave things as they are and, say, a DDoS attack uses your PC along with others then that stuffs up everyone, sometimes very badly. It can also leave them liable for damages and one day a company or two will go down the tubes for ignoring these threats. (There were serious rumblings a few years back which is when the worlds ISPs suddenly found that it WA technically workable to filter everyone's email after years of claiming otherwise.)
And just because YOU have not yet seen a problem on your machine it does not mean that you don't have one. Nor does it mean that your machine has not yet been recruited by some criminal network to do their dastardly bidding. If I was writing code to take over your machine for such nefarious purposes I would certainly be taking a bit of care with that code to NOT alert you - just so I can continue to recruit your machine at will.
Don't get me wrong. OS's annoy me as much as they annoy anyone. But the constant stream of fixes and upgrades are not just done to annoy me. Responsible developers really have no choice. Only the IRresponsible developers don't bother with fixes.

If you're on a wireless connection, you can actually turn off automatic updates for that specific network. Prior to the last update, you'll find it in Network settings, Advanced... set the current connection to 'Metered' and all you will get is a notification.
If you have the latest (recent) update, then go to Settings, Network & Internet, WiFi, Manage known Networks... select the network you want to affect, go to Properties, then switch on 'Set as Metered Connection'.
Good luck... :)
