3 or 4 times under different topics a quote from the NSW minister about the double demerit system operating this weekend has been posted so I put this up for comment..
As I understand the demerit system in Australia if you receive points in one state while driving on another state's license those points would normally be transferred over. They would then be recorded against your license and you would lose the number of points that the same offence would bring in your home state at the time that the infringement occurred e.g.
1) If you get booked in NSW this weekend using another state's license and that state doesn't have double demerits in force you will only have single points recorded against your license.
2) If you have a NSW license and are booked in another state this weekend you will have double points recorded against you regardless of what the other state is doing with their points.
It would be interesting to hear from people who this happened to especially the second one as it seems to be a little bit one sided.
Don't mean to be a wet blanket. If you don't break the rules you don't have to worry. Besides, who wants to get out in that traffic, leave it to the people who's holidays or breaks can only happen during these times.
Good idea rgren2, I wasn't actually intending on breaking any rules on purpose (I haven't been booked in over 40 years) The point is that if we both happened to accidently break the same rule in the same location seeing as you are from Qld and I'm from NSW it would cost me twice as many demerit points as you. In NSW I don't have to be on holidays I can stay at home and still be booked going down to the local shops or to the golf course and get the double penalty.
