The New England is much more picturesque but more winding up and down, Nothing drastic though.. Getting over from the New England to the main routes South to Melbourne has issues so if I am off to Melbourne from Qld I use the Newel.
Other route down the Pacific Highway then the Hume is a much longer trip and the Improvements on the Pacific Highway are still slowing traffic.
I am sure others will have their favourite routes.
I am not sure where your start point is but Millmeran Showgrounds $20 powered sites and the facilities are quite OK. Fuel at the back of the tyre place on the right as you are heading through town is the cheapest around the area. Bellata further South has good fuel prices kept low to attract the grain trucks. Peak Hill has a half decent CP If I recall correctly we paid $29 powered site for two of us. Interesting gold mine within walking distance. Also some interesting wrecks in a property on the main drag left side going through town. Some rare yank tanks, must be worth a bob or two.
Narrabri, Out to the Australia Telescope. I think it's twenty K's out and you have some shallow causeways if it's been wet. Nothing major and normally dry. Some of the Motels in town have hot springs.
I am told one of the Five dishes was the one they used for the movie. "The Dish" although it was about the Parke's Telescope. That is well worth a few hours Especially the Whispering Dishes. Café is not too bad either.
South of Coonabarabran the Hinkley falls Right side going South and midway down a hill. Worth a stop to look at the falls. Normally dry with billabongs but must be an impressive sight in the wet.

Lots to see on the Newell - good freecamps as well - got hot springs in the Pilliga - The Warumbungles - with Siding Springs Observatory there as well as some fantastic camping spots, The Dish at Parkes worth a look.

Thanks Julie's. In the past we have had to make it an overnight stay.
Now that David is retired we can take a bit longer.
Travelling with our Furbaby so some places are out of the question.
Wow Kath! Dave retired, you taking the wheel?? Some big changes over the last year or so! I'm thinking the Newell would probably be the better road going down - as Julie said, lots to see along the way, while up around Glen Innes, Guyra and Armidale on the New England can still be pretty cold at this time of year. Then come back home via the New England which would be closer to home. Whichever way you do it, have a great and safe trip.
Cheers
Joe
