Once marriage equality is legislated, all marriages between all citizens, will be fine. Connot happen fast enough for me because I am sick of the fools predicting all sorts of silly stuff. Plenty of examples from other countries that NOTHING bad happens. Lots of good stuff though.

Correct me if Im wrong. I though gay marriage / union was mainly all about legal rights. Rather along the lines of de-facto with male & female.

Even with real & de-facto, I feel like Im walking on egg shells. If I refer to a de-factos partner and husband or wife, I get sharply reminded its my PARTNER. If I call a married persons other half partner, Im generally reminded that its my HUSBAND or WIFE. A partner used be business or sports so when someone refers to their partner, Im not always sure what is meant.

With gay partners, one often likes to be called husband, the other wife. This seems to be taking the gender out of husband and wife and replacing it with a role. I could get into real trouble here.

Im not against gay partnerships but I think the words Husband, Wife and Marriage are being hijacked. And I think that is the basis of some of the NO campaigners.

It surprises me that the YES campaigners havent contracted a lawyer to up with some legal contract(s) that allow a gay union. Pre-nuptials, wills, powers of attorney etc. Lawyers probably see no money in this. Too busy with class actions (typed cynically).

What seems odd to me is that heterosexual couple are opting for de-facto relationships, where gay couples want marriage.

John. Your two LEGAL cartoons are spot on with making a mockery out of marriage. Had a co-worker that did both - 7 times. Plus a few de-facto ones in between and all over a period of about 10 years after which I lost track of him. Go out on the turps on Friday night and turn up on Monday married. Then after a few weeks get divorced. He even did it twice on business trips.

Over the many years I have know dozens of 'gay' couples who live together and who consider their relationship akin to a 'marriage'.

Similarly, I know many couples that were legally married in jurisdictions outside Straya - but now living in Straya.

In each case the men refer to each other as the other's husband and the women as each other's wife. Simple really.

It is an interesting foible of the heterosexual world that when two lesbians are living together the question is inevitably asked, "I wonder which one is the bloke?"

The lesbian couples just see each other as a woman ... again simple really.

I have had, and still have, close friends ... gay female, gay male, transgender (before their 'change' and after) ... and they are so damned 'normal' most don't 'see' their 'sexuality'.

Unfortunately, I have also had non-heterosexual friends who have found the persecution, abuse and non-acceptance too much and taken drastic action to end it all.

Anyway, all of that notwithstanding ... I again implore all those who either have yet to vote or are undecided ...... please simply just VOTE. Whatever your views and therefore whatever the outcome, let the total population of votes be a large majority of our population.

Please ensure the outcome is representative and not just a majority of a small minority.

I started this thread wondering how long it would last before it got a little out of control and was shut down by the moderator. However, I am very pleased to note that it all gone smooth so far without any nastiness that often happens. Congratulations to all who have contributed so far.
