Junior drag car driver Anita Board dies after Perth Motorplex crash

An eight-year-old girl who suffered life-threatening injuries in a drag racing crash at Perth Motorplex has died,

I ask, what the hell is an 8yo girl doing in a Dragster ???

Back in my days of Stock car Racing, one had to hold a driving license before they were allowed to race, this meant , you had to be at least double this girl's age,

Way more kids killed while properly restrained in the back seat of cars driven by inattentive parents.
Way more kids die in back yard pools, at the beach etc.

8 year olds have been driving junior dragsters for over 20 years and not even one serious injury, now you want to join the sensationalist media and close it all down???
6 year olds race motoX and carts.
Where do you think all the talent comes from in these sports.

Certainly an inquiry needs to be held into this accident.
I would want it looked at in the areas of ****pit protection and barrier safety.
perhaps some procedural policy changes might be needed, but give a great sport and great young sports people a chance to do what they love.
We have too many nanny laws as it is.

Gday...

Interesting, KW. Many sports have had juniors for decades. Not sure about speedway/stock car racing outside Victoria, but I had friends in my teens who were regular racers as mid-teens at Brooklyn Speedway.

As a very involved motorsport participant, active car club member and official, CAMS steward and other volunteer capacities, I consider Juniors are very safe and well cared for in the sport.

Here's some Junior Motorsport regs -

I believe the girl who has now unfortunately died as a result of injuries received was actually doing an 'evaluation run' in preparation to gain her Junior Licence.

Damned sad, unfortunate and so horrendous for the family - who are a drag racing family of considerable experience.

From my experience over the years with motorsport, clubs devote much time, tuition and guidance to juniors ... it is unfortunate that this kid had this outcome but it is not a usual outcome. My son at age 8 was competing in go-karts - safely for the following five years.

Some years ago, I had friends whose children, under 10 years of age, who competed in BMX meetings - up to State Representation. Unfortunately their youngest son was killed in a BMX event at age 11 - falling off the bike and being run over by a number of other competitors.

Cheers - John

Kiwijims is right.

Whatever is an 8 yo doing driving a vehicle capable of 100 kph.

Where does the blame lie? look no further than the parents, whatever are people thinking when they allow kids to take part in these high risk activities.

At 8 years of age a child is just entering primary school, usually year 4, and is a long way from fully developed, both mentally and physically.

Had the parents not facilitated the girls participation in the sport she would have still been alive.noconfusefurious

Thanks Santa, At last someone with a bit of common sense and some thought of the danger that some parents put their kids in,

You guys missed the whole point because too focused on blaming parents a kid too young.
You should be asking why the safety built ins did not save her.
There has been many drag racing accidents at much higher speeds and driver
pretty much walked away.
this should've been one of those.
What safety measure went wrong for this youngster to die???????

Only one safety measure that was abused , that I can think of, that is.......

Keep kids that young out of dangerous situations, if the parents had obeyed that rule, there would have been a beautiful young lady still alive and would have grown into someone the Parents could have enjoyed.

Now they have NOTHING  nonono

Like to see you both say that face to face to the parents - maybe when you pick yourself up again you might have some sense knocked into you...

You can lead a person to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

I don't know how anyone in there right mind can support a child driving a dragster ,as far as the remark try saying that to the grieving parents no that would be a cruel lousy act,but I will bet as sure as night follows day they will not allow another child behind the wheel of a high powered dragster, they have my simpathy poor things the pain must be immense ,let's hope no more kids ever have to suffer the same fate...
