Seems to me the vote was driven by commercial interests.
I'm more than just a little concerned, since the vote was announced businesses Australia wide have been salivating about the extra income SSM would generate.
A) it was a non-compulsory, non-binding, SURVEY ... not a Plebiscite.
B) if you feel it was only driven by commercial interests, you are very narrow-minded. If that was the case, I betcha NZ and airlines are not happy - they were making a good quid from couples travelling over to get married. Let alone, those going to the UK.

It's a disaster for us my daughters getting married at the end of the year, can you lmmagine how hard it will be to find a venue now it will cost me a fortune
What's wrong with these people living in a de-facto marriage relationship like many hetero sexual couples have done for many years? Legal matters of their relationship can be sorted out via a solicitor, as far as things like inheritance & power of attorney are concerned.
In 20 years time we don't want 12 year old boys at primary school running around the playground at lunchtime playing KISS CHASEY do we? Teaching ''normallity'' in schools is going to be crucial to maintain established practices. It was basically a 60-40 vote, not overwhelming by any means.

Cynical resoonses aside, why does any couple wish to marry ? De facto relationships are treated differently on some states and territories of Australia. Married couples are not treated differently. In some matters of law, de facto relationships are not recognized as an entity before 2008/2010 if at all. So events and circumstances prior to 2008/2010 are ruled differently from events after those years even though every thing else is the same. These predictions of our future are being increasely comical and suggest people don't understand the real issues.

I guess the kicker is, the Hetros have always had that choice. SSC'c haven't.
This is about giving everyone the right to make that choice. It won't become compulsory.
