I will never complain again at how much time you have to wait around in a NSW motor registry to get something done. Yesterday I wasted nearly 4 hours of my life at the Royal Oman Police station trying to get a drivers license, there were maybe 100 people with no queue and no order if you could fight your way past all the Indians and get the attention of one of the officers behind the counter you got served. Luckily we work for a big company and got some help getting through the process with an Omani sponsor pushing us along. After a lot of going from counter to counter, a lot of being told to sit there and one of the most ridiculous eye tests I have ever done I was told that I couldnt get my license because I had LR on my NSW drivers license which meant that I could only drive light trucks. A lot of arguing got me nowhere and I now have to drive 2.5 hours down to their headquarters in Muscat ( without a license) to get clarification. As I am now considered as a resident an international drivers license is no good so looks like Im off to Muscat. Sometimes we dont realize how good we have actually got it in Oz until you come to places like this and start dealing with the authorities or different government departments. By the way 2 of my NSW colleagues got knocked back because they had HR on their licenses but the one who an endorsement for a motor cycle and the Queenslander who had his endorsed for driving a boat apparently were ok -
cheers BB

Splitting hairs probably ... but in Philippines not actually a bribe. The public servants are so poorly paid it is the only way to get service - call it an incentive/tip.
cheers - John

Bribes in Mozambique worked because they got paid very little over here they are more likely to drive a BMW or a Lexus and probably get paid more than me. You are right Kebbin I wouldnt try and bribe them they are pretty serious when it comes to the ROP besides a Rial is worth $3.20 and that adds up quickly when you start throwing a few of them around.
Someone we know had a similar dilemma in a country on the African continent and went back in with a printout from the WA licensing authority website explaining the various classes of licence as coded by the letters and this was accepted!
cheers, Kay

Yep Yacketty tried that got a printout from the NSW RTA site and like our applications for an alcohol license it is still sitting in someones in box waiting for a decision but as they say over in this part of the world inshallah - god willing . (If they say it twice then you know there is no chance of it ever actually happening.

I'd call it a bribe. I lived in Philippines for 20 years. Have paid money to Mayors; vice Mayors, Police Generals, Governors, Judges, a Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge is equivalent to our Supreme Court Judge, all paid to get things done or to win a case. It's true public servants are poorly paid, especially the Police. Get pulled up for a supposed traffic offence, it's better to pay the fine to the Policeman !!!! Is that a bribe !!!!

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Recently renewed my licence at Springwood in the Blue Mountains where I had to wait a whole 5 minutes which is very different to Penrith, suspect I might have some difficulty in Oman as my licence is a HC & 4B suspect that may cause some confusion over there.
