During the last 7 months that I have been in Oman, UAE and Bahrain what strikes me most about driving here is that the majority of vehicles on the road are large SUVs, trucks, european and american muscle/luxury cars. Although there are smaller cars they are in the minority with the most popular make seeming to be Lexus - probably understandable due to the lack of taxes and the cheap fuel. Big V8 SUVs like Nissan, Landcruser, Lexus, GMC Denali, Silverados, Toyota Tundra, F250s , Grand Cherokees, Honda Pilots, they are all here along with many others that I have never even heard of. The amazing thing is that I have never seen one of them used for towing as far as I can see all they buy them for is to intimidate other road users and show how macho they are. Everyday I hit the freeways in my 1.5ltr Yaris and I am in fear of my life, believe me looking at one of these ugly steel monsters filling my revision mirror is not a pleasurable feeling when my foot is flat to the floor doing the 120km speed limit. It was probably far safer travelling around here when everyone rode camels now i pass light trucks with camels happily riding along in the back just like a cattle dog.
Just thought I,d add the saying over here is using your indicators is only for the faint hearted or however you say that in Arabic.

Hi Belmont Bear , interesting read . Got me thinking when you mentioned the LandCruiser over there. I have been told that Landcruisers up your way are licensed to tow 4t straight out the show room? Do you know if this is correct?

Not sure Dhutime what they are rated to tow but Ill see if I can find out - like I said I,ve never actually seen one towing anything but I have seen big groups of them coming out the desert after a day of bush bashing. There are probably just as many Lexus SUVs as Landcruisers they both look the same also the big Nissan V8s are pretty popular with petrol being so cheap, costs me 6 OMD (A$20) to fill up my Yaris from empty and 15 OMD (A$50) to buy a carton of beer.
The difference between Parramatta Road which I,ve also had the pleasure of driving in my youth is the speed limit it,s 120kph here and they treat that as the minimum with most of them going a lot quicker - people in buzz boxes like mine better get out of their way. By the way giving someone the finger will get you a couple of days in jail if they report it to the police and you refuse to appologise.

Dhutime as far as I can find out the Landcruiser that is sold over here is rated to tow 8100lbs or 3675 kgs but as I said I haven,t seen any of the larger vehicles being used for towing they (including the women) just seem to use them for intimidating other road users. I do however see some trailers being towed about the place but mainly by work utes which are more likely to be Tritons or something similar..
