Commonwealth Games

SWMBO has the TV on all the time watching the games. I just have a glimpse when I'm in the kitchen.

Plus:

Paralympians are integrated into the entire program. The swimmers are performing what would have been world record able-bodied times 50 years ago. Awesome.

The cycling in the velodrome has my attention - again.

Minus:

It would be nice if the actual event being run was on the screen.

There was an athlete on screen in just her uniform. The commentator stated that she was a 400m champion. At no point was it mentioned what sport or what discipline (running, hurdles, freestyle, medley etc.)

Rusty,
Don't hold your breath expecting the Teeve people to understand that not everyone has the time to tune in to every second.
That's what it would take for you to know who they were talking about at any time.

It's good that the paras are integrated, far better than a separate games.

The English also compete as the individual components of the UK. And there a few other Commonwealth country competitors who are making a show of it that would not do so well at the world level.

We do well in swimming but track & field is not so good. Tamsin Lewis (athletics commentator) made a comment on day 1 of the track & field that we had better show the medal tally now as it may not look so good when the swimming finishes. Forgot that most of the world class runners actually belong to Commonwealth countries.

Takes the focus off bad & stupid things like the woman lawyer suing a barber because he would not cut her daughter's hair, or the Middle East problems etc.

Brontie & Kate Campbell should retire while they're Golden Girls at these games.

If they go to the next Olympics & don't win gold, which is highly likely, they'll be classed as Chokers again.

Cruel world.

Looks like I view the Commonwealth Games in a different way some some others.
We have World Championships every year and Olympics every 4 years.
As an elite athlete it is an ideal time for them to be able to represent their country at a different level.
Consider maybe some of the smaller countries that get overwhelmed on the world stage have a chance to at least compete.
How about some of the sports that are not in the Olympics?
The memories of Malawi beating New Zealand in the netball, countries winning their first ever medals, watching the Aussie girls wait 5 minutes after the finish of the 10,000 m just to clap in the last competitor.
Yeah it is great to win a few gold medals, but there is much more than that.
As for pre-emping what may happen in the future for the Campbell sisters - get over it and give credit where it is due.

They'll take a lifetime getting over it after the Tokyo Olympics. Sad but definitely on the cards for them. The saying ''quit while you're ahead'' springs to mind.

Still find this a ridiculous point of view.

Quit just because you may not win?

Maybe Sir Donald Bradman should have quit after his first century.

Agreed, but the Don never got called a Choker did he. The media are SO cruel these days if athletes don't live up to THEIR expectations.

Luckily I've avoided 99% of this over hyped event and the over the top parochial reporting about how wonderful the Aussies are.

Take a look at a list of the countries competing, less than surprising that we've won a heap of medals.

We stayed right away from that neck of the woods. High rents, ads telling us use public transport, walk.

I have not been watching the Commonwealth games, only some snips from the news

I was happy to read the following media report

It was an act of sportsmanship that will help define the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

As Lineo Chaka, representing the southern African nation of Lesotho, ran the last few laps of the women's 10,000 metres on her own at Carrara Stadium on Monday night, three Australian athletes stayed on the track waiting for her to finish.

From what I can make out, the last runner was way behind, so three Australian sport ladies, waited at the finish line to give her encouragement

The Don needed 4 in his last innings to finish up his career on an average of 100. He scored a duck. Did he choke?

Thankfully swimmers are above the media. They are heavily into their PB's.

If you and others are sucked in by the media hype, I see it as your problem, not the swimmers.

The Campbell sisters are true champions regardless of what happens in the future.

I'm sure the Campbell girls would be the first to tell you that they have under performed ( been disappointed, choked whatever) there has been a gold individual at World Championships and one or two at team events at Olympics maybe others I'm not sure.

I am sure of one thing though and that's the Commonwealth Games is not up to Olympic nor World Championship level. The Commonwealth Games is only a training camp with plenty of booze and sex at hand once the training is done! I think we are going to be brought back to earth in the next Olympics with a hard landing.
