The Eagles

I saw on the news today that the Eagles Greatest Hits album had surpassed Micheal Jacksons Thriller as the biggest selling album in history. I guess for those of us who have followed this bands career since the 70s it comes as no real surprise. I had the pleasure of seeing them play live one brilliant summers night at Hope Estate in the Hunter Valley vinyards 3 years ago. Im glad that I had that opportunity as Glens Freys passing means that it will never happen again.

Cheers

BB

I'm fairly sure they are talking about US sales not worldwide.

I had a mate years ago who worked in a record store as a manager in the UK. All the big record companies had "Employees" who went round the stores whose record sales went to compile the Top Ten Singles or Albums.

He got to know quite a few over the years and they often bought hundreds of copies of records to distort the Figures. Sometimes groups that no-one had heard of and others were the big boys Beatles Rolling Stones The Who etc.  I have never believed the Charts since.

If you Mr Google Thriller you can see "Estimated" sales for Thriller ranging from 45 million to 110 million and that's today.

Personally much prefer The Eaqles.

You cannot seriously be suggesting that there are places in the world other than the USA?

Have seen the Eagles in concert twice. The Eagles = Pure Class. Its great to see Deacon Frey sing with the band. Deacon has inherited his father Glens great looks and voice. Glen would be proud. Soar with the Eagles Deacon wtg with a  Peaceful Easy Feeling. Always with a smile Kisha.

Nah of coarse not..... well yes they do have a tendency to totally disregard the rest of the World in everything that's been made, played, run & won in the World since we started keeping score.

You are correct Kebbin that is a figure put out by the American Record Industry based on the number of shipments (sales) in the US and that number is 38million (Thriller has 33 million) All countries will have a different list of best selling albums particulary the non western countries or those where english is not their first language. Even though this is only a US figure based on the size of their market it is probably going to be the highest in the world anyhow. When you consider Great Britians best selling album is around 6.5 million and Bat Out Of Hell in Australia sold 1.7 million you get an idea of the scale. Who knows maybe a Chinese or Indian album is the highest selling of all time as they have populations that are a lot bigger than the US but do they even spend money on  music I have no idea.

Good to hear Kisha that Glenns son is playing with them I havent heard him yet but if he has inherited even half of his fathers talent he should be ok.

I think it has been the baby boomers that got the Eagles over the line in the US but when you consider X,Y and Naughties buying power worldwide it's a different story. A couple of surprises in the top 10 for me anyway.

What surprises me the most is that the US dont have a bigger influence on the worlds total numbers. It doesnt really matter all of the artists on that list would have made plenty of money providing that their record  companies didnt rip them off. At leasr I know that there are more than 40 million other people in the world who like The Eagles.

Cheers

A great band among many others of equal ability, personal preference.

''Hell Froze Over'' when they were running out of a quid a while back, got back together & made another pile.

A lot of others doing the same, Fleetwood Mac etc.

DD knowing what they meant by Hell Freezes Over makes me think that you might even be a bigger fan of the Eagles than you let on biggrin. You are 100% correct about music being a personal preference I took time this week to have a look around Slim Dusty country even went out to the Pub With No Beer at Taylors Bend and tell you the truth Im not really a Slim Dusty fan. I felt I owed it to my old dad as I had promised him that when I returned from Oman I would take him up to Kempsey to see The Slim Dusty center etc. Sadly he passed away earlier this year before I could get back home but at least I felt that he was there with me in spirit anyway.
