Politics

I am at a loss as to the reasoning behind the ban on political discussions on here.

Surely, we are all adults, can accept that others have a differing view to ours (a fact that's quite obvious when you look at some of the other threads) yet we are treated like kids who cannot get along unless there are restrictive rules preventing us from mentioning certain activities.

I have a couple of questions ...

1. Who decided that there'd be no political discussions?

1a. Are moderators not allowed to close threads that get unruly? If not, why not? - That approach seems to work quite well on any number of fora I have been involved with (including a couple as moderator)

2. Is a similar ban extended to religious discussions? If not, why not?

3. Why not extend the ban to areas such as "which van is best" or "which tug is best" or even "where is the best place to stay"?

If I'm well out of line, let me know, but surely the questions should be addressed in an adult fashion in an adult forum.

The owner of this forum makes the rules.
Maybe you could start your own if you don't like this one?
Cheers,

G'day(evening)John,
Rules clearly state " no politics". I have transgressed a bit. Cindy does a great job with moderating and would not have enough hours in the day. If you have read some of the Political stuff it soon degenerates. people are not rational about it at all. That is one main reason why grey Nomads will never ever have a dedicated party to get our just rewards.

Second that. I think Cindy does a fantastic job running the Forum - I like the Rules as is.

In general terms this is the easiest and most enjoyable forum that I am on, and mostly friendly.

I like the way it is moderated and handled.

In real life situations, face to face with your friends it's an old golden rule not to discuss politics or religion with them.

Otherwise you may end up with no friends.

The same goes here, it stirs up peoples emotions & ends in non productive, negative discussion. Simple really.

Have a nice day. smilesmile

Hi all,
My husband and I started this forum over 13 years ago to be a positive place to discuss, provide advice, ask questions and exchange stories relating to the grey nomad lifestyle. As the membership and topics posted have grown over the years, we have created several different subforums so that people could more easily find the kind of topics they want to read and/or contribute to.
We do have a section (I digress) where members can discuss other topics which may not be related to travel. However, experience has taught us that political discussions often lead to bad feelings and in some cases, personal attacks, so we made the decision to ban these types of discussions.  I do feel that there are many other forums/places on the internet to discuss politics if that’s what people would like to talk about.
We are very keen to keep our forum a positive, welcoming and inclusive place. If threads become political or if they breach any other of our rules (see our ‘forum rules’ subforum for details) we will either remove an offending post, close the thread down or remove it altogether.
I am the only moderator here, so if anyone has any issues with our policies, problems with posts or any other questions, I would encourage them to send me a PM and I'd be happy to respond.
Cindy (webmaster)

Well said Cindy!

I for one get a lot out of this forum in more ways than one so keep up the great work Cindy and Mr Cindy smile. It must be hard at times keeping a few under control.

I might add that you are more like a 'mate' than a 'boss' biggrin

Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Ditto to Doug from me .Also its kind of annoying that members still dip there toe in the water by trying to begin a topic knowing it will upset the peace and harmony .Cheers

So everyone is ok with being treated like a kindy kid.

@brickies, I did read the rules, I cannot help being inquisitive and I certainly dislike the suggestion that simply asking the question is "out of order".

As I said, I have been moderator on a couple of fora, understand the time required etc, but still do not understand why adults cannot be treated like adults.
I'm also on a number of other fora where mature political discussion is allowed. The moderators (and there are several, in most cases) monitor posts fairly closely, and there's a "report post" function available to anyone who believes they've been wronged, or that a comment has overstepped a "line".

So you want to have a revolt against the site owner who is more tolerant and nowhere near as nasty as the forum you mainly frequent. Or maybe go over to whirlpool I'm sure they will accommodate you with some robust political & religious discussion. John you seem to have completely dismissed Cindy's reply above ignoring what she said, very rude John.

Where did I say I wanted to revolt? Cannot one ask a question without being howled down? (Not sure what forum you are talking about that I "mainly frequent").

I have not, as you suggested, "dismissed" Cindy's reply.

Given the attitude to anyone who asks a question, I shall "dismiss" myself. As I said, I'm not comfortable being treated as if I were a kindergarten kid, unable to restrain myself.

Bye.

The fact is, most people that talk about religion and/or politics do act like kindergarten children with their ideologies. You might not JA but most do. However your "BYE" comment proves to me that you indeed are one of those people with your kneejerk reactions which isn't necessary.

If you join any club they have rules, don't like them, join another club. It really isn't that hard.

Have to smile at the ambiguity of this John! your desire is to allow political discussion on this forum, at the first sign of disagreement you spit the dummy, wonder how you would handle a bit of political argy bargy, not well I suspect.

As a matter of interest I note your account is still active, so guess you are in fact still with us.

Regardless, I fully support the site policy of no politics or religious discussion.smile
