Look at your fuel gauge - if it is on the left side of the dashboard, the filler is on the left side of the vehicle. Conversely, if it is on the R side of centre of the dash, the filler is on the right.

It's not so much that, but more of driving the old vehicle for so long it became habit.

Good theory erad but my grand Cherokee's fuel gauge is on the right hand side of the instrument panel and the filler is on the left hand side of the vehicle.
The bowser indicator light shows which side filler cap is on. A triangle-shaped arrow indicator adjacent to a dashboard gas pump icon indicates which side a vehicles fuel door is on.

Zinc cream i.l.o. toothpaste doesn't work either.
And the incense sticks with the wire core are actually sparklers.

Gday...
I have not seen fuel gauges like that nor heard of anyone mentioning that the position on the dash of the actual fuel gauge indicates the location of the filler - eg on left of dash the filler on left/on right of dash the filler on right. I guess some vehicles might though.
However, most newer vehicles have fuel gauges with the "triangle-shaped arrow" that Possum mentions -

Yes - it is not often that I am right, and I am wrong again!. I actually meant the little triangle on the fuel gauge as above. With me I have 2 Mitsubishis, and they are on opposite sides of the car. Not only that, one is diesel and the other petrol. I am petrified that I will put petrol in the diesel tank. To this end, I have painted the inside of the fuel filler door in Dayglow Orange. When the door is opened, it leaps out at you, but it is still possible to mis-fuel.
Live and learn ... I have seen that arrow before but it didn't register that it was an indicater of which side the filler was on. LLD I havent tried zinc cream as a toothpaste but I did accidently used Canestan once - not a great taste but I've never had a fungal infection in my mouth

When giving oneself a No 2 Crew cut - remember to put no2 comb on the clippers before 1st cut in the centre of hair or else one gives oneself a reverse Mohawk!
Remedy? Give one self a No 1 all over - not so obvious then!

I slowly realise as I get older that I am definitely NOT the fastest rat in the race.
Also the older I get the more I realise I do not know.

Actually saw a result of that last week when an uncle forgot the #2. So nephew got a #1 all over, not a #2.
I always had my hair cut by my grandfather. The #1, 2 , 3 were the clippers themselves. He occasionally picked up the wrong pair. Only 3 days between a good and bad haircut he'd say.
I cant remember the times I have pointed my roll a door button at the car waiting for the doorlock to pop up!.Thats after I realise that my white Pajero is 2 cars down from the Pajero I am trying to open !!
Aw Yeh ...has anyone else tried that" bubble gum" they sell in the mens toilet at the pubs ? YUK !! Cheers.
