RE: My Daily Gripes

Now that I'm getting older, my bladder seems to be getting smaller, with the result that my toilet visits are becoming more frequent and urgent. That's no so bad at my place, but it becomes a problem when I'm staying with friends or relatives.

This begs the question, why do people design houses where the toilet is in the bathroom? Why are separate toilets and bathrooms not the norm? Do you really want to clean your teeth immediately after someone has done a number 2? Should you be doing the toilet dance for 30 minutes while the other half is applying her makeup?

What is the point of state-to-state extradition in Australia (or what is the point of state governments)?

AIUI, if a person is wanted for a crime committed in state A, but is currently in state B, then a magistrate in state A issues a warrant for his arrest. When this person is subsequently arrested in state B, he is brought before a second magistrate who does nothing more than rubber stamp the validity of the warrant. Why do we need this process at all, and how much does it cost the country?

What were we calling stock market fluctuations before they became "corrections"?

It would appear that any return to norms after a period of high or unusual activity is a "correction". Does this mean that the end of Trump's presidency will be seen as a "political correction"?

(3) What's the deal with prices such as 99c or $99.99 or $29990 (drive away)? Do advertising droids really believe that the average person is too stupid to understand the difference between $100 and $99.99?

Here's an interesting "fact":

http://www.folj.com/lateral/fact.htm

3. Many shops have prices set just under a round figure, e.g. $9.99 instead of $10.00 or $99.95 instead of $100.00 . It is assumed that this is done because the price seems lower to the consumer. But this is not the reason the practice started. What was the original reason for this pricing method?

Solution: The practice originated to ensure that the clerk had to open the till and give change for each transaction, thus recording the sale and preventing him from pocketing the bank notes.

I haven't checked snopes.com, but I have my doubts.

Reminds me of another fisherman in Tassie, he caught a heap of couta and was not doing well at selling them at 3 Bob each, which was fair value in the day. Suddenley a slip of the tongue, or inspiration hit. " Couta, 3 bob each or 3 for 10 bob "; he sold out in a very short time. He was also a great footy coach and a sometime wharfie. Also one of the few men to get a reprieve from the then lifetime ban of striking the umpie.

Why do speakers of Australian and British English choose to sing with an American accent?

Why do singers need to breathe audibly during their performance? For example, why "lu-huv" instead of "love"?

The correct colour for football boots is black. Not yellow, or red, or blue, or white. The game is football, not ballet. At the very least, all team members should wear the same colour. It's a uniform, not a fashion show.

Would all tennis players stop grunting .. please.

Would people refrain from mutilating themselves for the sake of fashion. No tattoos or piercings, including earrings, please. BTW, earrings were meant for women, not men, at least in my day.

No ripped jeans, please. If they're torn, it's time to mend them or discard them.

"Blue Poles" is not art. It's a wind assisted bowel motion.

Rap is to music as the Paralympics are to the Olympics. It is the vehicle by which the music industry accommodates the musically handicapped. It doesn't matter if you can't sing or dance or play a musical instrument. You can still participate, because everybody can rap.

In Queensland you can be fined if your child's back-seat DVD player distracts the driver in the car behind you:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07-01/queensland-mobile-phone-laws-everything-you-need-to-know/11266950

A New South Wales woman was fined $337 last month because one of her passengers was using FaceTime.

'That can occur here in Queensland, even down to kids with DVD players in the back of cars-- if they are a distraction to the vehicle behind you, you could potentially get fined by that,' Ms Ritchie said.

Why are drivers who deafen themselves and others with their doof-doof sound systems not subject to the same penalties?

Why would anyone pay for funeral insurance?

If you're poor, then you won't be able to afford it.

If you're well off, then your estate should be able to pay for it.

If your children are 55+, then they should be able to cover any costs until your estate is liquidated. In fact the executor usually has special access to the estate to pay the funeral costs.

https://www.lawaccess.nsw.gov.au/Pages/representing/after_someone_dies/funerals/paying_for_the_funeral.aspx

Getting funds released from financial institutions

The bank may release some funds from the deceased's bank account to pay for the funeral. You will need to contact the deceased's bank and provide your identification to confirm your relationship to the deceased. The bank may also require you to complete documents, provide a copy of the death certificate, the deceased's will or an invoice from the funeral director, before they will release any money.

Why do our pollies keep punctuating their parliamentary speeches with "Mr Speaker"? Isn't it about time they ditched this quaint medieval anachronism? It's Parliament House, not Romper Room.

Dorian, i think you need to proof read your statement. It is almost always "romper room', seldom Parliament. They could say " One of seventeen varieties of Chair person"

I was told many many years ago that shop items were priced at 1/11 rather than 2/- because if 1/11 the cashier must open the cash register to give 1d change whereas if priced at 2/- the cashier can put the 2/- straight in his/her pocket.

Good Luck.

Why do actors constantly turn the steering wheel left and right while they're driving on a straight road (in the movies)? I have a mental image of what the car would actually be doing, and it's not pretty.

Why do people need to be mobile when they're talking on their mobile phone?

Some time ago, before COVID-19, I watched a young guy yapping on his phone in the shopping centre for what seemed like an eternity. I reckon he must have travelled about 500 metres without straying out of earshot.

Why do we need artist's impressions of accused criminals when they are identified by name and there are plenty of photos in the public domain?

Here is an example:
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07-31/ghislaine-maxwell-files-emergency-appeal-epstein-case/12510390

The news article has 3 photos and one artist's impressions of the same person. I don't get it. Does logic go out the door once you put a wig on?
