Awning Colour

Hi ,

We are considering a new caravan next year and some come with dark or black awnings.(JB DRE seems to be my favorite at the moment)

Just wondering if there is any  potential difference heat wise sitting beneath light coloured awning or black/dark etc given the same tempreture on the day.

Any thoughts welcome.

Thanks AL

I'm sure black absorbs heat. We painted our shower hatch with black paint and it disintegrated in a year or so while the one we didn't paint lasted many more years.
We have just replaced our awning after 10 years. It has a graduated colour from white against the van - good for light reflection especially at night - to dark grey at the roller edge. Touching both sections the white bit does feel a bit cooler.

SG1 Notice that your existing awning is white when rolled up. Had our awning replaced with the Black/Grey Striped towards the roller edge model and when rolled up the Black/Grey fabric is in the sun, to me if left outside between uses this will deteriorate the awning fabric more rapidly.

Friend has a cover over his rolled up awning, since he leaves the van outside in the elements when not in use.

Living in my van full time and in sun most of that time my awning is white at van end then light grey then dark grey on roller end. I find the white is exposed to the weather at all times even when rolled up therefore gets very dirty but wouldn't want it dark on van end. It cleans up ok even with just water and broom.

I replaced the awning on my caravan. The old one was white with blue trimming. I ordered a blue and white awning to replace it. What I got wss mainly dark blue with white at the outer edge. It is impossible to sit under it on a hot day. The radiant heat is too strong. Go for mainly white.

Hi,

Thanks for comments.

Erad you have confirmed with your comment what I was thinking, that the darker colours would be hotter.

Hopefully plain silver is available because I think white would look a bit average on a silver/black caravan.

I admit I prefer a white/silver caravan but so many are made with darker exterior colours nowadays.

Cheers AL
