There use to be a trick, some years past, with a post-paid Telstra account whereby if the account was set to have global roaming enabled it could be in some (all?) sat phones without having a specific sat phone account however the calls were very expensive - if have no idea if it still works this way.

Hi we have a sat phone and only activate when needed. Global star charge around $30 to activate and $20 per month for as long as you need it plus outgoing call costs . These prices were last year give them a ring for current pricing. Very easy company to deal with . You just have to keep an eye on when deactivating as payments are set up automatically .
