How do you pronounce emu? That depends on who you ask:

We lived in the USA for approx 8 years. Try telling the Americans that eemoo is wrong!
Bit like coooc-a-burras. I can't even spell it like they say it.

Mind you we stuffed up a lot of their names!!

Australians say Eeemyou non or new Australians say eemoo. I have turned off Sky because they have an add where the announcer keeps saying Basics instead of baysics. there also seems to be a trend to annnie when we say eny. In fact, thats seems to be another thing they want to destroy.... our language... the TV announcers don't speak Australian anymore its almost sounds like someone who has learned the language via computer using phonetics.

Some things are pronounced differently depending which State you live in, and even called different names. EG. Swimmers, Bathers, Togs.  Or, Suitcases, Ports.

I was born in QLD., and have always pronounced it Eemyou.  Have never heard it pronounced any other way.

Cheers,

Sheba.

kook-ah-booh-row was how Dennis Conner pronounced the name of his Australian challenger. I thought it was grossly disrespectful, as well as stupid.

One of my pet peeves is "kill-oh-meeter" versus "ki-lo-metter". The first is obviously correct, and the second is obviously wrong <flame hat on>. It's mi-lli-meeter, cen-ti-meeter, de-ci-meeter, and meeter, not millimetter, centimetter, and decimetter. It's ki-loh-cycle, not killosickle. It's ki-loh-gram, not killogrum.

But, hey, I've learned to accept it, even though it grates every time I hear it.

One thing that makes me laugh is the thought of South Australians, Queenslanders and New South Welshmen singing the national anthem. Two are singing "advahnce", the other "advants".
