Is anyone on this forum an avid or even casual listener of Podcasts.
I would like to start a topic where all that are interested may contribute their findings, thoughts and comments on anything that they may be listening to.
I would like the topic to remain on Podcasts rather than a re hash of what has already been done on IBooks, Kindle and all the other book sites.
My likes currently are True Crime Stories and anything Australian.
I hope that over time this topic may provide a great library source for Podcast participants on this forum.
I might add that I avoid the pay sites and generally stick to the free casts even if I get the occasional advert.
Here are a couple of podcast sites to start it off..
I should add for what it is worth I use the ICatcher app on apple but there are many to choose from on both platforms.
"Podcast" is a modern term for, usually, spoken word audio or the sort of thing the BBC and many other radio stations across the world have been doing for about 100 years.
Like many of my generation I grew up with radio (and reading) as my main form of entertainment and connection with the outside world. As I lived in the UK it was the BBC who supplied the service and an excellent one it was too, as it remains today.
About 15 years past it became clear to me that I would end my days living in the bush way out of range of TV (which I don't like anyway) and Amateur Radio, commercial radio and books would be the entertainment which both stimulated me and maintained what little social sanity I have remaining :) To that end I began recording BBC and ABC radio programmes of all sorts for future listening. I generally use my phone to play them and Bluetooth them to the caravan hi-fi except when in bed when I use the phone alone.
At last count I had close to 500GB of spoken word audio recorded; this is quite a lot. Indeed a quick and rough calculation indicates it will take about 700 hours to listen to it all.
So that's a long way of saying; yes I do listen to podcasts or something very similar and over the next few days I'll post links to some stuff I enjoy.

What I like about most of the Podcast apps is that you do not need to download or store content unless you want to.
I use the ICatcher Application which although is on the IOS platform gives a user the opportunity to select, arrange, download or stream content from all the free sources and make playlists if you need to listen while travelling or working.
There are many Apps that will all do a similar thing for both Android and IOS. Or of course, you can just use Spotify or similar but I find a lot of these are just not user friendly.
Any links to articles would be great as we can all then tune in in the old terms.
One I really enjoy is the podcast "You're Dead To Me". It is a British podcast with an historian/comedian host together with an academic and a guest comedian. The trio then discuss either an historical landmark or event with the comedian asked to express his or her views.
It is really entertaining being not only knowledgeable but really funny.
Another two that are quite good are "Unexplained Mysteries" and also "Conspiracy Theories". They are both American and are well researched and presented.

Casefile is a great resource, it has some good Aussie content.
I had a quick look at Unexplained Mysteries and it has certainly got my attention. I have added it o my ICatcher library.
I will check Conspiracy Theories later today, hopefully.
I actually got into the whole Podcast habit by listening to The Teachers Pet. What an amazing story.
Unfortunately it is currently blocked from any audience due to the ongoing court proceedings against the accused.
When the court case is over I would imagine it becoming available again.
It is the same woman on both Unexplained Mysteries and Conspiracy Theories with a different male announcer on each Angie. I find them both really good as the announcers are first rate without all the usual drivel and poor attempts at humour. There is also another one called Supernatural that covers similar topics with another good female narrator.
I find these really good when I am driving along or when I am just having a good relax. Hope you enjoy them too.

Thanks DMaxer,
I was surprised when I first got into podcasts as to how many professional and long distance drivers that listen to them.
When I get a spare half hour or so I tend to get a deck chair and sit in the shade and listen.
When we are driving I make up a playlist through my App and it just connect it to the car radio and enjoy the trip.
You are also correct that some are very poorly presented with some commentators even swearing and being offensive. When I find a new site I tend to listen to a cross cut of a few selections and assess if it is suitable. It becomes fairly easy to delete or unsubscribe unsuitable content.
Check them out Doug. I didn't know much about them, in fact nuthin' really until someone told me about them. I became really interested in some of the podcasts about the sightings of UFOs in Australia in the 1950s and at Roswell in the USA and Rendlesham Forest in the UK. These are all covered in the podcast sites that I mentioned. There is no hysterical reporting, swearing or embellishment, just factual reporting with some analysis.
They are great to listen to if you wake in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep. Just put your tin foil hat on so you don't get beamed up!
Podcast = talk radio/infooration/discusstion format
Audio Book = Novels to read out loud
I use Beyondpod App (on Android phone), I like it because It auto downloads my podcast daily, and I can have a local folder in the same app. The local folder is for my audiobooks from CD's or other sources.
This way when I finish listening to my daily content, it start playing the next chapter of a audiobook.
My Podcast list (most of these are weekly shows) I just search inside Beyondpod to add them.
Tuning in to SciFi TV
The Money - Podcast (ABC radio national Radio show)
Triple M - Motley Fool Money
Your Wealth (NAB National Aus. Bank/nabtrade Share market show)
The Orbital Mechanics Podcast (A show about Rockets and Space)
The Economists - ABC RN (ABC radio national Radio show)
3D Printing Today
Coronacast (ABC radio national Radio show)
Audiobooks
Currently listening to Isacc Asimov Books. (I got from tapes and CD's)
Another source of Audiobooks is your local library.
My home library has Borrowbox Books (bolinda.com, but free via the Library)
Personally I cannot tolerate talking books, podcasts etc.
I enjoy reading be it an Ebook/kindle or hard copy book.
Similarly I also cannot take talk back radio. I tune into radio to hear music and periodic news reports. As such I specifically avoid stations that don't meet that criteria.
Predominantly I listen to our local community radio station for that reason (KLFM Bendigo) or my own music only compilations on USB.
Please excuse my ignorance but I know completely nothing on this subject but, A. do these podcasts use much download and, B. can you rewind them if you miss a bit due to your attention being needed elsewhere for a few seconds. when I had a car with a tape deck I used to love listening to talking books while traveling. Landy.

Typically one minute of audio requires one megabyte of storage so a 30 minute podcast will consume 30MB of your download bandwidth - it's best to download them via wi-fi so the next time you get free wi-fi download a heap of them.
Yes, you can rewind and lots more with modern audio software on your phone or computer. Some people listen to podcasts at a faster speed (perhaps 1.5x) to make them shorter but that doesn't appeal to me.

Hi landy
Mikes figures are very close with download figures. His suggestion of using free WiFi is good for cheap listening.
The casts you download are stored on your device until you a ready to listen.
The other option is just to stream and listen to the content without storing it. For this you need to be in a phone service area or on WiFi. Streaming still uses about the same data amount.
I have 5g per month on my phone and I use 4G approx per month. If I want to go over that with podcasts I use our WiFi Dongle which we mainly have for Netflix and other larger files.
The App I use has selections where you can listen and then it deletes the story, you can select played and unplayed you can select stories downloaded and the options go on. This lets you listen to stories again if you wish.
I like it because if you are listening and you are interrupted you can just start from where the podcast was switched off. My App does this automatically.
Just dont set the downloads to automatic from your subscriptions unless you are on a larger data plan.
DMaxer,
I am into Conspiracy Theories and I have to agree that it is very well presented. My first experience was the Princess Dianna episodes which were great. I will listen to their feed on ESP next up. Their library looks great, I just need more time.
Many Podcasts are actually advertised on TV. I do see adverts from time to time on our Vast service.
Happy listening,
Angie

If you want a really good laugh and you like NRL listen to Full Credit To The Boys. Fair bit of school boy humour but really funny. Comes out late Tuesday night or early Wednesday mornings.
The other one that is really good is Roy and HG with Bludging on the Blindside. Comes out each Saturday evening.
Thanks Mike and Angela that's very interesting. I have very little download on my phone but a lot of download at home so in my case I would need to record plenty before my next trip, which I will certainly look into. Landy

I don't really know Doug. I just had a podcast icon on my phone from new and just pressed it and found them all. I know when I listen to podcasts they continually mention Spotify but don't know if that is what I have. Pretty helpful aren't I.
I am sure someone like Angie will have the answer and be more helpful than me.
Perhaps if you Google the names of the podcasts they will inform you of their origins.
My phone is apple as well and I use the ICatcher App.
I think Podcast One will only have their own content.
With ICatcher your search will have to have the correct wording to get a result.
Most Podcast platforms are free but Spotify has a paid version. Spotify in my opinion is not user friendly.
You might try just using google to search the title and when it is found there is generally a link in the information that will open the podcast in that link.
A platform called Wooshka is a common one adds many podcasters load their content on that platform.
I will do some more investigation and get back to you.
I have just done a google search on the two podcasts I linked to in my first post.
One platform that came up was Podtail.com Just one link to a suggested podcast on Podtail called Dateline will provide hundreds of hours of listening. This may or may not be to your liking.
It has adverts unfortunately but its search function in the top Right hand corner seems to work ok. As I said above the free version of Spotify works ok but I am spoiled by the apple app.
See how you go as once you begin searching you will find many topics that may be of interest to you. The ones DMax mentioned are great...
Keep us informed
Regards
Angie

I thought the same Angie.Perhaps they did and didn't want to say anything. There are some good articles on this on the net.
Perhaps it might be another Amityville saga, who knows.
