People are always correcting others when they call a tomato a vegetable, by pointing out that tomatoes are fruiting bodies and are therefore fruits. But no one points out that many other vegetables are also fruiting bodies and are therefore also fruits. This includes pumpkins, squash, beans, peas, sweet corn, chillies, capsicums, cucumbers, zucchinis, marrows, chokos, etc.
Why is the tomato the only one anyone ever corrects you on?
By the way, botanists say vegetables are leaves, stems, roots, bulbs, flowers and tubers, which are edible. They also say that any product of the seed bearing structure of a flowering plant is a fruit. Which means that zucchinis are vegetables if they are served as flowers but are fruits if they are served as zucchinis!
I'm just preparing for my next caravan adventure to Eden and had some free time on my hands to ponder the imponderables. (It also niggles me about the tomato.)
Just as important, probably more important really ... why do people object to pineapple in pizza because it's a fruit when as you correctly identify, many things used on pizzas are likewise .. fruits ??
My bananas are trying to get away from the ground by hanging humongous bunches 4-5m above the ground which makes cutting them down with minimal damage to them, other plants & ME rather interesting.
With the bunches weighing 20+kg, I find it a challenge to get them down. Currently my best way is to cut the main trunk in three places, folding it over (on my side of the fence is best).
Does anyone know where I can get genetically modified bananas that ripen from the bottom up??
