I have every Wheels magazine since May 1953 (#1)   plus an Index (privately written ) for them.

I still have the Program for 1966 "Dragfest" at Calder (first visit by Drag racers and their cars  from USA )

'60s and '70's was a great era for "grass roots"  motorsport........build it yourself and drive it yourself .

I just noticed the add for the Hornet SSB radio. Now I, feel old. I had a Cougar SSB that was 'tweaked' and could slide between channels.

Yes, I was naughty back then.

I used to buy a magazine called Sportscar World that came out every month. It did a road test on all or most new cars in Australia. I remember it also had a section written by a fellow called Romesy something. He would do road tests on council trucks, anything different. I remember he even did one on a Mr Whippy van. We loved it. Read every road report even though I was still at school and had no money. Great memories.

That's the one KJB. I remember they did a test on the first Falcon GT and later on the first Monaro GTS 327. They drove the cars from Melbourne to Sydney. They also did MGB and TR6 and the brilliant Morris Cooper S. Weren't those cars exciting for any kid in those days.

It may have been a long time ago but I do remember buying the SWR meter in that ad that year, also re enlisting in the Air Force after my first 6 years in January that year. We also got married later that year before being sent to Malaysia for 3 years. Memories do go back a lot further though....

Dougwe, not that old, but I bet if I had put moderately well aged someone would have a dig.

Struth KB, how many boxes of mags is that? I have two beer cartons(VB Long Necks size) of unexplored mostly wheels.

KB, Romsey Quints was a legend for me.

Dougwe, " Naughty" ? who would of thunk ?

Magazine mob in Melbourne came back to me, only 6 issues of Australian Rod published, so maybe $15, maybe free to a serious collector.

My dad and later I, would collect Practical Motorist and Motorcyclist.
This magazine contained a wealth of knowledge but one article I will never forget is a plan and drawing of a bracket that was fitted under the choke cable dash mounting on an Austin A 40 to clip the gear stick in when you were in third gear to stop it jumping out of gear.

Gee, things were a lot more simple in those days.biggrin

I bought my first transistor radio on layby. It cost $18.00 paid over 3 months. I only made $16.00 a week. It was bigger, and heavier, than a house brick. But it was cool. Imagine paying over $1000.00 just for a portable radio today. First car was a Mini 850. Sliding windows and all. Every time it rained I had to put something over the distributor cap to keep it dry.. But beer was 12cents a schooner. So it wasn't all bad news.
