Women drivers - 1888

https://www.caradvice.com.au/912738/bertha-benz-and-the-worlds-first-road-trip/

'Other problems arose along the journey, all of which Bertha solved with her both her intuition and her mechanical knowledge.

A blocked fuel line was cleared using her hat pin while her garter was used to insulate an ignition wire. She enlisted the help of a blacksmith to fix a broken chain and a cobbler when the wooden brakes on the Patent-Motorwagen began to fail. To solve the problem, Bertha asked the cobbler in Neulingham to install shoe leather on the wooden brakes, thus inventing the replacement brake pad.'

There's still plenty of women who aren't scared of getting their hands dirty and have good mechanical aptitude. My daughter is one who was always more interested in being under a car with me than being inside with her mother. She still repairs the tractor and vehicles on their farmlet in NSW, and yet holds down a very senior public service job in Canberra. Just enjoys doing it.

the first time i met her i was loading 44 gal drums at a fuel depot in cairns she pulled up wanting to load an climbed up an showed me how it was done, just to get me out of her way, so i would not slow her up any more than necessary. ( back then the 44's weight more than i did) i was carting prawn from outposts up the cape back to townsville, take supplies up bring prawns back down, our paths crossed on many occasions.

60 minutes did a segment on her

From the article link put up by Whenarewethere, it appears that Bertha Benz, may have been the first long distance vehicle driver

I seem to recall that there is a book about Toots Holzheimer
