I reckon South Australians ate it in early 1980's. There were so many loads from Uncle Bens at Wodonga that went to Adelaide each day, could not have been enough cats and dogs to consume it all.
Many food processors are licenced to produce food for both Human and Pets. Customers sometimes get a little funny over food origins, so food processors don't advertise that they serve both markets.
Re the OP's question; many moons ago I was involved with supplying rabbits - trapped and head shot for the dining table - the skinned rabbits were each inspected by the processor - to ensure free from Hydatits, (Echinococcosis a parasitic disease of tapeworms of the Echinococcus type). One shilling per carcass great money at the time. The same processors supply Kangaroo, Goat & Camel for human consumption.

Some of Uncle ben's, now Mars is dedicated to reprocess frozen imported fish for cats food, that smell a bit ordinary. The dog food and cat food made from assorted animals is fine. All is pretty squeaky clean, as told to me by employees.
I worked on site there in 1970 for a construction co, doing a plant extension, the staff cafeteria was fantastic.
