It is now on, fairly even 1st half. Blue baggers show some spirit.- went down in last few minutes

Wife's great nephew to debut on Saturday, cant tell you who until tomorrow.

Ps Storm won their opener last week, but not so flash in beautiful Sydney weather last night

Love AFL, I follow the Blues but don't hold that against me. We had our chances, Harry McKay played on twice in front of goal and missed and the Umpires favoured the Tigers for 2 goals, only a young side, hope they win more than they lose.smilesmile

The wife and I went last night, rabid tiger supporters, the wife that is. It was good to be back. The MCG was at half capacity at 49,000 but the crowd atmosphere was great, it was good to see. The Tigers won but Carlton brought it right up to them. Hopefully crowd capacities will increase as the season progresses.

Storm are just keeping the other teams on their toes Craig. Can't make us look too good this early in the peace.

Craig it's not a good looking game mate, aerial ping pong for p**fters, not a scratch on Rugby Union.

Yay...I didn't really expect anyone to post my exact thoughts! If you can jump 50' in the air, you're a fantastic player. And don't they carry on like Pork Chops if someone achieves the amazing feat of kicking a ball between a couple of sticks! Spare me! Doesn't matter if you can't even kick the ball between a couple of posts stuck in the ground...you'll still get a point for being pretty close.Always have called them Poovtaball Players! I got offered good money as a youth to play, but wisely turned it down .Cheers

Unfortunately all the good union players are born, live and play overseas! Even the good Australian players seem to be imports.

I can understand someone not liking a sport, but some people on here are just beyond belief with their quite frankly pathetic comments.

Congratulations to the great nephew Craig, a big day for the family.

As I am an avid Rugby League follower from up here in God's Country, I am struggling to understand the language being used in this thread.

OH!!! I erred, I do understand the STORMS who may be a weaker team without Cam. Smith.

For my money, the Rugby League theme song should be

""Simply the best... Better than all the rest.""

Just two updates, Melbourne beat Freo - Go The Dees !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The old enemy Collywobbles got theirs last night.
and number three

JACOB is no 34, named to start at Centre Half Forward ( That is between the centre of the ground and the goals, for heathens)

Hawks won by a point, down by 39 at half time. Jacob got a few touches, gave away a certain goal for himself to a better positioned player. Some praise from the coach.

G'day Bob, a second cousin I think, but inherited the height somehow. He had size 13 shoes when he was 14

As a born and bred Victorian (don't hold it against me), I absolutely cannot stand how Aust Rules is treated, no worshiped, in Victoria.

Don't get me wrong, I played it as a lad (but only because it was the only choice for winter sport until I was in my late teens), when soccer was introduced.

Followed the match of the day religiously when posted interstate while in the Army.

But treating footballers as heros and gods is B****e.

Just cannot get enthused.

Sarco over here in WA we get punished just as much eg; the afl season has just kicked off and up till that point I was happy with our only daily newspaper but!! now I still pay 1.75 for it and there's only two pages front and middle back that does not contain afl news sheesh. Yobarr made a helpful point too, which I thank him for, how many goalposts with no minimum height bar do you have to give these aerial ping pong players? The good news for me is that despite the relentless afl bombardment at least eddie everywhere is gone, I think, pray and fervently hope cheers :)

Had a smile at the rugby crowd poking their noses into an AFL thread to tell us just how much better their game is.biggrin

As a matter of interest, NRL club membership in 2020 was just under 284000, by contrast the AFL club membership for 2020 was just short of a million, figures don't lie.

The numbers speak volumes, one in 26 Australians is a member of an AFL club.

The NRL fans are not shy about expressing their opinions of our much loved game, found this amusing description of an rugby game and thought whats good for the goose is good enough for the ganderwink

From what Ive seen, both union and league are played by overweight males with no necks and headbands pinning back their cauliflower ears. Between mauls, they run for a few metres then they all fall down in a heap. They get up, stick their noses up each others backsides, throw the ball, run a few more metres then fall in a heap again.

Rugby players are known as the bum-sniffers for this reason. Dogs do this but no one pays to watch it.

Then of course there was the infamous Hopoate incident, don't recall anything quite as bizarre happening during an AFL game.biggrin

Guys I have no problem with those of you who support the code of AFL but please don't lump the game I support NRL (Rugby League) in the same basket as Rugby Union they are 2 completely different games and have been in this country since 1908.  If you don't understand the difference then following aerial ping pong in the only country in the world where its played seriously probably suits you. I personally like the idea of getting a point for missing it keeps all the not so skilled players interested biggrin. By the way Santa when is the AFL going to come up with a superfit stringbean who can beat a no necked, overweight, cauliflowered eared NRL player in a boxing match as they haven't managed to do so yet ?

While I was in SA last week I read the Advertiser which they were giving away in a local supermarket, I was looking for the results of the NRL 1st round games. I searched on every page and I couldn't even find a column hidden somewhere on the 5th back page, I found the details of every pre season game played in the AFL, the AFLW and all the local SA teams both senior and junior. I found what the players ate for breakfast and what social activity they were planning on the weekend but there was no NRL. I guess with coverage like that its no wonder AFL is the most popular sport the kids down there probably don't even know there are other codes played in this country. Now I'm wondering why Adelaide put in for and were given a state of origin match in 2022 when they have that level of support. It seems that people in AFL states hate NRL or Rugby until there is an opportunity to host a game that will boost their economy then all of a sudden they become supporters of the Qld canetoads or of our 2nd division Rugby team the Wanabies.

Hmmm...without being 100% sure,I seem to recall that one Mel Meninga dropped a self-proclaimed AFL poovtaball player "boxer" who had challenged him to a fight. Mark Jackson (Jacko,if you must) was the individual involved, and he got dished up something wicked. Cheers

Come on people, we're supposedly discussing games involving skill along with fitness, surely it has nothing to do with who has the best palooka, but then I guess that's how some still define masculinity.biggrin

BB, If they still do giveaway rags in Sydney or Brissie, the results would be the same. No AFL in them either. Anna soon put up her hand for last year's Grand Final.

Whacko Jacko V Mal Meninga, the promotor should have been charged with attempted mans slaughter!

I see the level of commentary from some hasnt improved.

Homophobic comments/names say much less about the target than the shooter.

I recall not that long ago that a contributor with a similar vocabulary was shown the door.

Hey BB, some valid points there but as Craig said try and find the AFL results in NSW or Qld, and they have 2 teams each.

I like all sports, even the girls cricket and AFL, but I don't like the off side rule in soccer and rugby, and you have to kick it over the bar, what's that there for? to hold the posts together? And pass backwards?

Bazza Hall (AFL) would knock the stuffing out of Smell my Finger by the way........smilesmilesmile

The last fight I know of wasn't  that long ago and was between Barry Hall and Paul Gallen it was scored by the 3 judges as a majority draw, 1 judge gave it to Gallen by 2 points and the other 2 scored them even. Aparrently Barry Hall and Sunny Bill Williams are supposed to have a bout organised for later this year.. Barry Hall actually went pretty well against Gallen who has been fighting professionally and now has 10 wins, 1 draw and 0 losses - Jacko was just a show pony who picked a fight with the wrong bloke. Anyhow at the end of the day you are never going to convert an AFL die hard to NRL and you are never going to covert an NRL die hard to AFL so why do we bother trying to convince each other which code is the best...I dont mind watching any sport if the game is interesting.
