Passports

Just wondering. We have held an Australian passport for over 40 years. Last year it was due for renewal. With covid restrictions, me being ill and a brain lapse, I forgot to renew the passports. I kicked myself because it's a lot of stuffing around and costs, around $400.00 each. Now I'm wondering if it's even worth the effort. Has anyone else given up on overseas travel and let their passport lapse?

Will the government ever let us out of the country? Will they let us back in? Is it worth the risk, jab or not?

I renewed mine last year before they expired. My Australian passport the government back dated to the day I applied & didn't hear a thing.

My British passport they profusely apologized for the delay & kept me informed of progress & forward dated the passport to the date is was sent & I received it in a week after the initial delay as Australia Post wasn't sending mail overseas. Through the process I spoke to an extremely helpful person actually from England.

The British passport was cheaper than the Australian passport.

I suppose because we are born in the colonies the local administration has the attitude of continually shafting Australians!

It was an interesting experience how different countries treat their citizens.

!0 year passport $301, if your over 75 you can renew for 5 years $152.

Useful info here.

"Will the government ever let us out of the country? Will they let us back in? Is it worth the risk, jab or not?" of course they will, I think the question is, is it wise to even contemplate travel right now, I don't think so, particularly if your in the at risk category, most of us oldies are.

I had an uncle who died overseas many years ago (natural causes) the family was unable to afford to bring him home, had to bury him in France.

Life is full of risks, some of us assess them and act accordingly, others roll the dice and let someone else clean up the mess if the worst happens.

Will I travel overseas again? no, done my share and enjoyed every minute of it, but, wont take the chance again.

Insurers won't cover you if your past 70 and have health problems, if they are prepared to offer cover the cost is exorbitant and exclusions apply.

Santa I was just rounding out the costs. If I was "healthy" i would be on the next plane overseas. But Ive had my wakeup call in the USA. Had to lie to QANTAS to get home. (Actually I didnt lie I just said nothing). Tens of thousands in medical costs. But even so I would take the calculated risk. My passport is now tooooo expired to do much. But maybe next year or the year after. It just annoys me that I forgot.

I can hold three passports but at the moment have none - a first for me :)

I cannot think of a reason I may have to do emergency overseas travel so I decided, as they are (inappropriately) expensive, I would simply wait until I choose to go overseas again and, given the C19 situation, that may be some time.
