The speaker are of my own design and consist of a 15" RFC speaker 6.5 " mid and 1" tweeter. The cabinet has been made out od 20mm mdf and with a volume of around 120 Ltrs and have handled at the time a perreaux amplifier ( 9000 ) to test out at the time of the build. Handling the power of the Yamaha amp is a bit of a sodar and after 10 years of use sill sound great.

Some home built subwoofer info here for those who haven't seen it.

To me, vinyl is Flintstone-esque audiophoolery, just like valve amps, oxygen free cables, Monster cable, and the like. I reckon that an "audiophile" wouldn't be able to discern any difference between an OFC and a wet string.

Back in the 80s I used Van den Hul RCA leads in the car. But I did have the first car CD player available & KEF GT200 hi-fi.

I wasn't stingy enough to use sting or telephone twisted wires. But good quality cables do make a difference over run of the mill cables.

Point taken. I apologise.

In fact I have two turntables, two amps, and three cassette decks from the 1970s, all on display in the granny flat (Sony, Akai, Sansui, JVC, Aiwa). I love retro technology, but for nostalgic reasons only.

BTW, I also have an original vinyl copy of Tubular Bells. I still appreciate the music, but I like to hear it without all the artefacts.

Thanks for the acknowledgement Dorian, apology unnecessary but appreciated.

You mention cassette decks, they were notorious for tape hiss, better quality tapes with finer magnetic particles helped, regardless it was always a problem.

I have to agree with the fact that well recorded CD's certainly provide a very clean listening experience, I play CD's most of the time now, however I still use the turntable regularly, perhaps its nostalgia.

I enjoy the process of perusing the album covers (many were works of art) removing the LP from the cover, placing it carefully on to the turntable, cleaning the disc at each and every play, then lowering the tone arm onto the disc, then the magic happens, living in the past? probably, does it really matter if we gain a degree of enjoyment and comfort from the process, you reach a stage in life where memories are important.

I found some forgotten inner sleeves when playing my vinyl, some great stuff that you can read. Some cd inners need a plus 10 magnifier. And some do still sound better than the cd version. Had to wash a couple, must have been to a couple of parties without my knowing.
