With 2448 Americans and 41 Australians dead and many more injured, a trillon US dollars spent, 20 years of fighting, it seems it has been a waste of lives and resources.

The British, Russians and now the Americans have all had a go at Afghanistan and all have failed. I think its a country that will just have to be left to the Taliban, sad as what that is.

I particulary feel sorry for the women who are treated appallingly under Sharia law.

Collo.

Unfortunately it is the suffering of the general populace, particularly women and girls by this barbaric regime, and their penchant for attempting to force their beliefs down the rest of the civilised World's throat, that makes it almost impossible to ignore.

When will they ever learn???????

Wars, skirmishes, local insurgencies they are all fodder for the arms manufacturers, dealers and governments, who could not give s--t about the civilian population. Has been so ever since I can remember and so it will happen again for sure.

When will they ever stop?????????? Never!

Oh yeh, who would want to be on the security detail?

ps American Intelligence (pardon?) and other think tanks predicted it would take 90 days for the Capital to be surrounded, pretty close to 7 days eh?

The situation in Afghanistan is a humanitarian nightmare, words fail me, the withdrawal from Vietnam over again.

This from the ABC "

For Afghan women, their increasing power is terrifying.

In early July, Taliban leaders, who took control of the provinces of Badakhshan and Takhar, issued an order to local religious leaders to provide them with a list of girls over the age of 15 and widows under the age of 45 for marriage with Taliban fighters. It's not yet known whether they've complied."

Nothing will surprise me with China's expansionism policy. Unlike other countries if they move in, they'll take over the country. Several reasons Afghanistan is desirable- fits in with the belt and road plan, resources and USA won't want to commit to defending the country.
If it happens, Iran will be China's neighbour! Not good not to mention possibly genocide.

if the population of a country can submit as quickly as they did then the majority of the people would probably be in support (hard to believe)
20 years of coalition forces, the russians before them plus previous history of conflict, their military was well equipped well trained but had no heart . would another 20 years make any difference

Well said Dogbox.

Initially I was not happy with Biden's decision but this morning I heard him say (paraphrase) "Why should Americans fight and die for a people who won't fight for themselves?" And, I thought, the man has a point....

How the Taliban will behave this time around is anyone's guess, some commentators think they'll be much less harsh. Do not assume all people in Afghanistan, including women, are hostile to the Taliban and Sharia Law, many see it as a moral and proper way to live. Do not judge such countries by Western standards.

Dogbox is right. Fairly obvious many are very happy for the Taliban to take over.

A big thumbs down to Slowmo and his team doing nothing for weeks to get people out after many requests by ADF.
Many will be slaughtered. Obviously another 1 hour a week Christian.

Looks like "rule AK47" is now in place.

To me it's always been a tribal warfare country with non stop fighting for centuries. Only reading ONE book is hardly going to drag those tribes into the present from their medieval culture.

What get me a bit p'd off is the various television programs seem to drag out off the woodwork an ex soldier who served in the theater maybe a couple of tours who get out of the ADF and go back as an NGO contractor and security expert who use a number of local in various rolls. Now these NGO's rattle off we have provided a list of names to the government/DFAT of people who they want pulled out because its all gone belly up.

The bleeding heart cry all over again, great that Scomo has reinterated that anyone who tries to get to Australia illeagily will never get to stay.
