Useless information to ponder over

Glass takes one million years to decompose, which means it never wears out and can be recycled an infinite amount of times!

Gold is the only metal that doesn't rust, even if it's buried in the ground for thousands of years.

When a person dies hearing is the last sense to go. The first sense lost is sight.

Your tongue is the only muscle in your body that is attached at only one end.

(REALLY???  Wonder how this person thinks a penis works!!??)

The tooth is the only part of the human body that cannot heal itself.

If you stop getting thirsty you need to drink more water. When a human body is dehydrated, its thirst mechanism shuts off.

Kites were used in the American Civil War to deliver letters and newspapers.

The song Auld Lang Syne is sung at the stroke of midnight in almost every English-speaking country in the world to bring in the new year.

Drinking water after eating reduces the acid in your mouth by 61 percent. Drinking a glass of water before you eat may help digestion and curb appetite.

Peanut oil is used for cooking in submarines because it doesn't smoke unless it's heated above 450F

The roar that we hear when we place a seashell next to our ear is not the ocean, but rather the sound of blood surging through the veins in the ear.

Nine out of every 10 living things live in the ocean.

The banana cannot reproduce itself. It can be propagated only by the hand of man.

Airports at higher altitudes require a longer airstrip due to lower air density.

The University of Alaska spans four time zones.

In ancient Greecetossing an apple to a girl was a traditional proposal of marriage. Catching it meant she accepted.

Warner Communications paid 28 million for the copyright to the song Happy Birthday, which was written in 1935!

Intelligent people have more zinc and copper in their hair.

A comet's tail always points away from the sun.

Caffeine increases the power of aspirin and other painkillers, that is why it is found in some medicines.

The military salute is a motion that evolved from medieval times, when knights in armor raised their visors to reveal their identity.

If you get into the bottom of a well or a tall chimney and look up,you can see stars, even in the middle of the day.

In ancient times strangers shook hands to show that they were unarmed.

Strawberries and cashews are the only fruits whose seeds grow on the outside.

Avocados have the highest calories of any fruit at 167 calories per hundred grams.

The moon moves about two inches away from the Earth each year.

The Earth gets 100 tons heavier every day due to falling space dust.

Due to earth's gravity it is impossible for mountains to be higher than 15,000 meters.

Mickey Mouse is known as "Topolino" in Italy.

Soldiers do not march in step when going across bridges because they could set up a vibration which could be sufficient to knock the bridge down.

Everything weighs one percent less at the equator.

For every extra kilogram carried on a space flight, 530 kg of excess fuel are needed at
lift-off.

The letter J does not appear anywhere on the periodic table of the elements.

Space dust must be causing the "rise of the oceans" then. "The Earth gets 100 tons heavier every day due to falling space dust"

I think the earth is getting heavier because of all the woke people pigging out on smashed avocado on toast, there's a price for trying to be trendy.

I approached this list with my usual scepticism but was unable to find any fact which was obviously wrong. That said, I do have some questions.

Does the space station have windscreen wipers? <it's a joke>

How does the Hubble telescope keep its lenses clean? Does the dust just bounce off?

I found one forum thread where someone suggested that sunflower oil has slightly better properties than peanut oil. However, the more important observation was that a significant number of people have a peanut allergy.

As for the dust, it works out to 0.2 micrograms per square metre per day:

I have doubts about that one.

I think if one digs deeper using peanut oil has more to do with politics!

Windows on space craft use sapphire crystal on the outer & inner most surfaces. Same as your half decent watch. You are more than likely never to get a scratch & it does stay remarkably clean.

"Warner Communications paid 28 million for the copyright to the song Happy Birthday, which was written in 1935!"

Actually, Warner paid $28m for Birch Tree Group Limited, a company which claimed ownership of the copyright to Happy Birthday To You.

The copyright was subsequently ruled invalid:

"Everything weighs one percent less at the equator."

This is better stated as "every object weighs 0.7% less at the earth's equator than at the poles".

"For every extra kilogram carried on a space flight, 530 kg of excess fuel are needed at lift-off."

This would suggest a mass ratio of 531:1. That's much higher than the 16:1 ratio of the Space Shuttle, and 3:1 for Virgin Galactic.

https://www.marssociety.ca/2021/01/07/rocket-physics-the-rocket-equation/

The final important concept is that of mass ratio. This is how we quantify how much fuel a spacecraft needs. A spacecraft has a wet mass --  its gross mass, full of fuel and a dry mass -- its empty mass, with dry tanks. The mass ratio is simply the ratio of wet mass to dry mass. The higher the mass ratio, the greater the fraction of the spacecrafts wet mass is fuel.

Virgin Galactics SpaceShipOne has a mass ratio of about 3, which means its two-thirds fuel by mass at the beginning of the mission. Note that SpaceShipOne is merely a suborbital rocket it follows a ballistic trajectory that briefly enters space before falling back to Earth, somewhat resembling an artillery shells flight.

On the other hand, the orbital spacecraft have much higher mass ratios. The Space Shuttle had a mass ratio of 16, making it almost 94% fuel by mass at launch. The mass of everything that wasnt fuel: its structure, engines, avionics, life support systems, control systems and oh yes, dont forget the crew and the payload had to fit within the remaining 6%. The only reason it could get away with such a high mass ratio at launch is because it leveraged staging.

Now I know why getting the second spare wheel on the roof requires more fuel... a couple of beers!

I often wonder how and where these "facts" originate. Trying to find the source of the 530kg figure proved fruitless -- all the searches turned up references to the same list of facts. It's a lot like religion -- if you ask someone to prove that their god exists, they will tell you that it says so in the Bible. I suspect that someone may have invented this number and then watched it go round the Internet. It seems harmless enough, but then the same methodology is probably responsible for QAnon.
